New- Ask the Fed®: Energy Update:

Oil & Gas- August 16

High oil and gas prices have both direct and indirect effects on prices across the world’s basket of commodities, impacting consumers and businesses alike. Not surprisingly, many have asked what can be done in the U.S. and other countries to rebalance global supply with demand for oil and gas. So what does this all mean for banks?

Please join speakers Senior Business Economist Garrett Golding, Senior Business Economist Jesse Thompson, Senior Bank Examiner Thom Quint and Senior Bank Examiner Marshal Boumeester for a discussion about the oil and gas market and observations on bank lending.

Bank of America Market Minute

Equity markets posted their best week in a month last week, pairing this year’s market retreat to about 17% for the S&P 500. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2% over the week, while the S&P 500 was up 2.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite notched a 3.3% gain. The Consumer Discretionary sector performed best within the S&P 500, while most defensive sectors lagged. Materials and Industrials also posted solid gains. Treasury extended an advance, pushing the 10-year yield to around 2.75% by week end. The European Central Bank (ECB) increased interest rates for the first time in 11 years with a hike of 50 basis point (bps) versus expectations of 25 bps. Several reads on the U.S. outlook for monetary policy, growth and inflation are due this week. Federal Reserve (Fed) officials have indicated they are gravitating toward another 75 bps rate rise at their July 26-27 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. Also topping the list is the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ preliminary estimate for Q2 gross domestic product (GDP). A contraction would be the second in a row, succeeding the 1.6% decline in Q1. In other economic news, June’s personal income and spending data will be reported Friday, followed by the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index. The Employment Cost Index is also due Friday. Earnings season chugs along with around 170 S&P 500 companies scheduled to report Q2 results this week.
