Bank of America Market Minute

U.S Equities posted weekly losses following the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) policy decision to raise rates by 75 basis points (bps) last Wednesday followed by Fed Chair Powell’s press conference. The S&P 500 lost 3.35% on the week while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 5.65% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.4%. Labor market data showed elevated job openings with October job growth topping forecasts, as the unemployment rate rose more than expected. A Labor Department report showed that employers added 261,000 jobs to nonfarm payrolls above consensus estimates. September’s unemployment rate rose to 3.7% from 3.5% as the labor force participation rate dipped slightly lower. The two-year U.S. Treasury note yield reached a 15- year high of 4.7% last Thursday. Overseas, year-over-year (YoY) inflation in the Eurozone accelerated by more-than-expected to 10.7% in October from nearly 10% the previous month, fueled by elevated energy prices. The Bank of England raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 bps—the biggest increase in over three decades. More on October’s inflation picture will come into focus on Thursday when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the consumer price index (CPI). Consumer credit data and the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index, both due this week, will glean clues on the health of the consumer.
