Bank of America Private Bank Market Minute

THE BIG PICTURE November 18, 2024 After closing at all-time highs last Monday, the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 2.1%, 3.2%, and 1.2% over the week, respectively. While this marked a shift from the prior week’s impressive post-election gains, the three indexes remain in the green versus Election Day as last Friday’s close. Like its Large-cap counterparts, the Russell 2000 Small- cap benchmark fell 4% last week, relinquishing nearly half of its prior week gains. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury climbed 14 basis points (bps) to 4.44% at last week’s close after briefly eclipsing 4.50% last Friday morning. Gold prices were lower for the third straight week, closing the week at $2,563 per troy ounce or the lowest level since mid-September. In U.S. economic news, inflation data fell in line with expectations. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.2% in October and 2.6% over the year, hotter than September’s 2.4%. Excluding food and energy, its core measure rose 0.3% over the month and 3.3% over the year. Producer Price Index (PPI) inflation registered at 2.4% year-over-year (YoY). Retail sales beat consensus expectations with 0.4% growth in October, while September’s sales growth was upwardly revised from 0.4% to 0.8%.
