Bank of America Private Bank Market Minute
Multiple crosscurrents drove investors into perceived “safe-havens” last week, while gold and oil rallied in the wake of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. As for U.S. Equities, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average managed small gains for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite declined slightly. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note declined to 4.61% last Friday, down from 4.80% earlier last week, breaking a string of five consecutive weekly gains. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX), fear gauge, spiked 15% last Friday on its strongest day for the year (hovering around the 19 level). As of last Friday, analyst estimates were for S&P 500 Q3 earnings to rise slightly. If earnings do rise, this quarter would break a string of three consecutive quarterly earnings declines. A U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed a monthly increase of 0.4% and an unchanged annual figure of 3.7% year-over-year (YoY). Core CPI rose 0.3% for the month and 4.1% over the year. Shelter and gasoline were cited as major contributors to the increase. The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand rose 0.5% over the month, while growth of 2.2% YoY was the largest increase since April.
