Bank of America Private Bank Market Minute

The S&P 500 notched its 47th all-time high of 2024 at last Friday’s close, up nearly 1% to cap the index’s sixth straight week of gains. Utilities and Real Estate led the index last week with the former sector now up nearly 30% year-to-date. While the Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.8% and 1.0% over the week, respectively, the benchmark Small-cap Russell 2000 Index outperformed its Large-cap peers last week with a near-2% gain—closing above its July 16th high for the first-time last Wednesday. U.S. Treasury yields were little changed by the end of the week while gold prices closed above $2,700 per troy ounce for the first time ever last Friday. Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, oil prices took a breather last week, down over 8% per the West Texas Intermediate benchmark. U.S. economic news focused on stronger-than expected retail sales in September. Sales rose 0.4% over the month, adding to evidence that the U.S. consumer remained intact in Q3. After hitting the highest level since August 2023 the prior week, jobless claims registered lower than expected at 241,000 for the week ending October 12.
