Letter from the Chair

Greetings IAEE DC Chapter Members and Industry Colleagues,

Instead of the usual Chair letter, I wanted to address some questions I’ve been asked about my role as the Chair of the DC Chapter:

1. What motivated you to take on the role of chair for your local IAEE chapter, and what do you find most rewarding about your position?

I have been a member of IAEE (IAEM) since 2000. Throughout this time, I have had the opportunity to be on several committees on a local and national level and currently a member of our executive committee for the past five years. With my experience, I have the “sweat equity” of decades of participation and now have the opportunity to lead my chapter to further solidify our great foundation in the DVM area, champion our efforts to create a positive and successful future direction, and achieve and exceed our goals to support our members and the industry at large to thrive.

2. How has your involvement with IAEE impacted your professional development and career growth within the industry?

I always viewed IAEM/IAEE over the years as the perfect environment for me to expand my industry knowledge and education and grow my network. This has benefited me tremendously throughout my career, and further enhanced my leadership skills and network while serving on the board of directors and executive committee.

3. What specific benefits have you experienced from the networking opportunities provided by your association with IAEE, and how have these connections influenced your career?

A networking opportunity is an event that allows you to interact with other business professionals to form connections, seek advice, and learn new skills. This defines the “why” I have been involved with IAEE for 24 years.

During that time, I've had the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people, many of which are my friends to this day. I cannot say enough about the friendships I have developed, and the support all my friends have provided me and my family throughout the years.

4. How do you balance your responsibilities as a local chapter chair with your professional duties at GES?

Like any volunteer role, it can be a challenge at times to juggle both chapter and work responsibilities. However, we have a very strong board of directors that all contribute to executing the responsibilities and driving the success of our chapter. And, when issues arise, we collectively resolve them quickly. I can also rely on my fellow board and chapter members to help me with valuable recommendations and connections so I can be more successful in my role at GES.

5. How do you see the future of the exhibitions and events industry evolving, and what role do you believe IAEE will play in shaping the future?

We have an incredible opportunity to shape and transform our industry by embracing new challenges and opportunities head on. We are a key component to ensuring our members and the event industry, along with other event industry organizations, stay ahead of the curve and provide the education, knowledge, and connections needed, so event professionals can have successful careers and fuel growth in our industry.

Your IAEE DC Chapter Chair,

Mark Shadwick

Community Service

Our chapter will be back at A Wider Circle on Saturday, November 16, to volunteer at their Silver Spring location to sort donations and prepare them for their store for their Essential Support program where they provide 10–15 families each day with beds, dressers, dining sets, couches, clothes, and much more — all free of charge.

A Wider Circle is working to create a region where children and adults are able to live safe, stable, and comfortable lives and have the opportunity to succeed.

Everyone is welcome at A Wider Circle; there are no eligibility or referral requirements. Our “no wrong door” approach ensures that everyone who comes to us is met with compassion and served in a dignified and respectful environment. We meet each person we serve where they are — identifying challenges, providing comprehensive support, and pursuing solutions together.

Read more about their incredible work to help those in our local community. We hope to see you there in November.
