Letter from the Chair

Happy September!

It has been a busy Summer for all of us and we are gearing up for an even busier Fall season. The Chapter wants to thank everyone who took time out of their schedules and joined in-person and online events for the first half of the year.

The DC Chapter is excited about the line-up of in-person and virtual (and even a hybrid) events we have planned for the rest of 2023! Based on feedback from members, we are moving some of our events to different days of the week and times and adding fun networking events back into the schedule!

While you will find our upcoming events listed below and more details on our website event page, I wanted to highlight some right here:

  • Our education program in September, Breakfast Bites, will be held on Thursday morning, September 28, at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health in Washington, DC. There will be two exciting programs presented, breakfast, and a tour of the facility.
  • Our Annual Business Meeting and Industry Forecast on Thursday, November 16, will be held in the afternoon followed by a happy hour to close out the year of education programs.

More social events are planned this Fall. We are bringing back our beloved Karaoke Night on October 18, which will be our IAEE Member Appreciation event. All IAEE active members (planners & suppliers) will receive free admission to the event.

Our Chapter YPs will come together for an interactive roundtable discussion on November 8, and we invite everyone to mingle with them afterward. Stay tuned for more information on this event.

Enjoy reading this newsletter. I look forward to connecting with you at one or many of our upcoming events!

Events

In the first half of the year, our education and social events have been engaging and well attended, including our first Summer Social Meet-Up in Maryland at The Crossvines, where members and event professionals enjoyed wine, food, and networking (and even golf before the event).

If you missed the June Technology Transformation session on how to save time and enhance engagement through a consolidation of solutions, you can still view the recording here.

Be sure to check out all of the programs offered for the rest of the year. We hope to see you at one, two, or several education sessions, networking events, and the community service program:

Do You Speak Attendee?

Success Starts Here! Content is king! Keep calm and …

Are your eyes glazing over yet?

Jargon is pervasive in marketing — and event marketing is no exception. Usually, you know it when you see it: If the phrase offers the ring of elevated importance but little recognition in the “real world,” odds are it’s just that. At best, jargon runs the risk of being too vague for “outsiders” to latch onto. At worst, it creates a thick stew of business buzzwords that leaves a bad taste.
