Hello College Access Champion,

As we begin the second half of the 2021-2022 school year, DCAN wants to hear from you. Given the continuous struggle of the COVID-19 pandemic, we need a temperature check on how you all are feeling, what support you need, and how we can better serve you.

We also want to celebrate the essential work you all do. To highlight the people who go above and beyond, please fill out the Counselor Appreciation nomination form for anyone you feel deserves additional recognition for their work.

The survey and the counselor nomination form are combined. The forms are anonymous and should only take 5-10 minutes. Thank you for your continued support of students, families, and the community.

The College "Fit" Project officially launched last week! This is a pilot college research campaign designed for 6- 12th grade students. 

The College "Fit" Project is a simple two-page instructional activity guide for students to identify their best "fit" colleges by learning key terms needed for college research. This key term bank is paired with our Detroit College Match Tool to support students in not only creating a college match list but also knowing what to look for based on their needs when determining what schools are best for them.

We'd like to highlight the following schools and organizations for registering to support their students with college research with a focus on match and fit with DCAN!

Detroit STRIVES is a professional development opportunity with one hour for college access topics and one hour on FAFSA strategy and completion. You can partake in the portion that is most relevant to you! This will be hosted every 2nd Thursday of the Month. For more information, contact Daniel Valentine, at dvalentine@detroitcan.org.

Join us for the first Lunch & Learn of 2022! We will be covering Skilled Trade and Career Pathways.

The Lunch and Learn will be held on February 17th from 10-1:30 PM virtually.

Rise is hiring community college students to lead organizing efforts to advocate for free college legislation and register students to vote. Rise is a student-led campaign advocating for free college and students' basic needs. 

Student fellows will build partnerships with state and student organizations, use creative online tactics to recruit attendees to events, and connect with youth in their community to register to vote. This position is part-time and flexible.

Register for the Fourth Annual Greater Atlanta Historically Black College and University (HBCU) College Fair. This event is virtual and FREE! The HBCU College Fair will take place Friday, February 4th, 2-6 PM and Saturday February 5th, 10-3 PM.

Some institutions will offer onsite admissions! There will also be college preparatory workshops, scholarship opportunities and more.

For registered attendees the HBCU College Fair Essay Scholarship Contest is available for college-bound seniors. Each student will have the opportunity to submit a 500-word essay answering the question, “What 3 Areas Should HBCUs Focus on to Continue to Attract Prospective Students?”

Three winning essays will be selected, and scholarships will be awarded in increments of $2500, $1500, and $1000.
