SKILLED TRADE AND CERTIFICATIONS LAUNCH 
Highlighting the importance of many pathways after high school
DCAN has officially launched our Skilled Trade and Certifications webpage. Our goal is to provide and bring awareness to programming and enrollment opportunities for students, families, and partners.

Dive into this newsletter for more information on resource centers, programs, Detroit Promise eligible skilled trade opportunities and to RSVP to our February Lunch and Learn with a skilled trade focus!

Did you know?
You can use your Detroit Promise Free-Tuition Scholarship towards obtaining your credentials for a skilled trade program. The Detroit Promise Scholarship is for 4-yr, 2 yr, and certification programs at participating schools.

Join us for our February Lunch and Learn! Our focus is "Skilled Trade Programming." This event will be held virtually and has been submitted for SCECH credits. 

The agenda includes:
  • Presentation from Atlantic Impact
  • Panel of Skilled Trade Program
  • Strategy Work Time

Specs Howard School of Media Arts

This is an opportunity for students to study broadcast and digital media, as well as graphic design. They offer scholarships and virtual tours. This is a great option for any student interested in the media industry!
Phlebotomy Express Training Centers

Students interested in the healthcare industry should consider Phlebotomy Express Training Centers. They offer Phlebotomy and Medical Assistant Certifications in as little time as 4 weeks. Scholarships are available and more information can be found on their website.
Detroit Training Center

Detroit Training Center offers a wide range of workforce development programs from Commercial Driver's License Training to Masonry Restoration. They also have a great network of employers to get students connected to job opportunities fast!
Detroit YouthBuild

This is a completely FREE program for Detroit residents between the ages of 18-24 who are interested a building trades career. They provide a computer and training materials and equipment. Detroit YouthBuild is a great option for students who have not completed high school or a GED program.

The information you provide will be used in the new Skilled Trades page on our website, launching in early 2021.

Trade School Program funding ideas

DCAN will be awarding $500 to 4 schools/organizations with the best trade program ideas.

Submit your ideas of efforts that your school or organization will put in place to educate families about skilled trade opportunities and increase the awareness and applications for your students that are interested and/or do not have a plan.

Who can apply: Any representative from a school and/or organization in the city of Detroit that supports 7-12 grade students.
Program: Your program should be inclusive and equitable in participation for the students that you support.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Detroit College Access Network is seeking a remote organizational support intern. The purpose of this role will be to fulfill tasks to aid in program and system development at DCAN. We are preferably seeking a current college student who can begin on February 1st.
