September is Membership Month

I can’t believe it is September already! It has been a very busy couple of months for us with getting our children back in school and dealing with the continuing pandemic. Some schools have had to close and moved instruction to virtual spaces. I hope if your child's schooling has been impacted in any way, that they remain safe and healthy. Children are dealing with a lot during this unprecedented time. Similarly, the next DCCPTA General Meeting will be held via Zoom, September 23. Invite and meeting info to follow.

As our schools and schedules have changed, so to has the ability to hold local unit elections. Still, we must make sure to get officers registered and memberships paid to Florida PTA. I, along with Leisa Potter, our VP of Local Units, are available to help. We're focusing on PTA/PTSAs units who have been inactive by helping them get reorganized. If you are one of these local units, please don't hesitate to reach out for guidance.

To that end, if you are looking for ways to increase membership signups, setting up a membership table at a football game or math night for example, can be a great way to reach parents, students, and teachers alike!

Looking ahead to 2022, I am excited to share that the Florida PTA Convention will be held in Orlando at the Orlando Omni Resort Championsgate, July 21st - 24th. Be on the lookout for more information regarding schedule and this year's theme, "Got Talent!"

Have a great September!
Kay Hawkins, President

Historian Message
Dear Historians,

There will be a training session just for you on September 18th. The historian breakout session time will fall between 10-11am. I look forward to sharing with you tips to ensure that the special moments of PTA at your school are captured, preserved, and shared for the benefit of your students, families, and schools all around. Our time together will be brief but valuable. Take care, be safe and continue capturing!
As always, feel free to reach out to me in with questions at historian@dccpta.org

Student Perspective
This month’s topic is Student Leadership & Empowerment. Students are extremely influential part of important decisions. You can actively participate and in some cases vote on important matters. At this year’s Florida PTA Leadership Convention, there were many programs for students where we learned how to be active in our respective PTA’s. Here are a few things covered in the Students for Students class, hosted by Faith DeVault, FLPTA Student Engagement chair who started out a student member herself

  • Speak up and speak out.
  • Be present for meetings, physically and mentally.
  • Have the drive to help out and participate.
  • If you have ideas, don’t hold them in, your opinions are valid regardless of age
