Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,
With its connection to the summer harvest, autumn is a season in which we often reflect on our many blessings. During the coming long weekend, families may have a tradition of gathering to share food and company and to give thanks.
As a Catholic school board, we are grateful for the strong foundations of learning, friendship, creativity, and growth that have been established during these first five weeks of the school year, while sharing our excitement and hopes for what is yet to come.
Our thanks is extended to staff, families, and community partners, whose commitments to Catholic education and ongoing collaboration are the cornerstone of our system which supports the faith formation and learning of all of our students.

Yours in Faith,
Monique Forster Tracy Barill

Elementary and secondary schools across DCDSB are preparing to demonstrate how they are "speaking with the heart" this fall.
Classroom displays and whole school plans are being put into action as staff and students consider what this year’s spiritual theme, "Speaking with the Heart" means to their school communities.
The spiritual theme, adapted from Pope Francis’ 2023 message on the 57th World Day of Social Communications, along with this year’s student-led and designed spiritual theme poster, invited both staff and students from the onset of the academic year to think how each of us can be stewards of the message and show what it means to communicate “according to God's style”.
At St. John XXIII Catholic School in Oshawa, students, staff and visitors who come through the doors of the school encounter the spiritual theme on display as soon as they enter; a visual representation that will grow and change as staff and students continue to reflect and plan throughout the year.
DCDSB families are encouraged to discuss what "Speaking With the Heart" means to them which, Pope Francis writes, includes, "listening without prejudice, attentively and openly… nurtured by closeness, compassion and tenderness" and come up with their own action plans as both caring community and family members.

Accessing Support for Your Child’s Mental Health
World Mental Health Day is coming up on October 10. If you’re concerned about your child’s mental health or general well-being, you can work with your school to help make sure your child gets the support they need. Early identification of mental health concerns can help prevent future problems.
The best place to start is by having a conversation with your child’s classroom teacher. If you’re comfortable, you may wish to share information such as situations your child has dealt with that may impact their mental health; approaches that seem to help your child; and behaviours that you’ve been noticing at home. You may want to ask their teacher if they’ve noticed similar behaviours at school. Having an open and honest discussion will help you figure out together, the best way to help.
DCDSB students and families can also speak to our board support staff directly by calling our Social Work Access Line and leaving a voicemail with their contact information. One of our mental health professionals will call back and provide support. Note that this is not a crisis line and is not monitored 24/7.
More information on mental health resources can be found on the DCDSB website.
