Message from the Chair of the Board and Director of Education
As summer draws to an end and we are greeted by the fresh air and vibrant colours of autumn, we often take time to gather with family and friends and give thanks. Here in Durham Catholic we are thankful for a smooth return to the school year, for the friends and neighbours who make up our community of faith and for the remarkable gift of Catholic education.

October is the Month of the Rosary
The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary with the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary taking place on October 7th. As Catholics, we have witnessed the power of praying the rosary and the comfort and healing it offers during difficult times. As a Catholic learning community, students, families and staff are invited to pray the rosary together.

DCDSB Special Education Review
The Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) will be conducting a Special Education Review with broad input from students, staff, families and partners. In alignment with DCDSB’s commitment to Equity, we have partnered with the Abilities Centre to facilitate the LEAD (Leading Equitable and Accessible Delivery) Process, where we will be engaged in a comprehensive self-assessment to develop an improvement plan to work towards transformational change.
One of the key outcomes is to build capacity in special education knowledge, and consistency in the implementation of effective programs and/or services for students with special education needs.
A committee has been established with representation from various employee groups to work through the LEAD Process. Throughout this process, there will be opportunities for all students, staff, families, and other partners to provide input and feedback.
We invite parents, guardians, and caregivers to provide input and feedback on the DCDSB’s delivery of special education programming and supports for students through a brief survey.
Complete the Special Education Review survey. The survey will remain open until Friday, November 4, 2022.

Outdoor Trail and Learning Space at the Catholic Education Centre
The Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) has been working closely with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA), who has provided guidance for outdoor learning spaces on a piece of property at the DCDSB Catholic Education Centre.
On September 28, 2022, students from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (Pickering) and St. Jude Catholic School (Ajax) came to the DCDSB Pope Francis Centre to participate in a day of experiential learning. Over 55 students collaborated to come up with design ideas for trails and outdoor learning spaces on this piece of land.
Students worked throughout the day on outdoor space designs, and moved over 28 yards of mulch onto the new trail paths!
We would like to thank students from St. Jude Catholic School and St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. In addition, we would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Brunnock, Mrs. Collins and Mr. Harvey from St. Jude Catholic School along with Mr. Pisani, Mrs. Ladrillo and Mrs. Van Rhee from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.
We are looking forward to continuing to share updates about this ongoing project which is led by students and educators.

Mental Health and Well-Being
Accessing Support for Your Child's Mental Health
If you’re concerned about your child’s mental health or general well-being, you can work with your school to help make sure your child gets the support they need. Early identification of mental health concerns can help prevent future problems.
The best place to start is by having a conversation with one of your child's classroom educators. If you’re comfortable, you may wish to share information such as situations your child has dealt with that may impact their mental health; approaches that seem to help your child; and behaviours that you’ve been noticing at home. You may want to ask if staff have noticed similar behaviours at school. Having an open and honest discussion will help you figure out together, the best way to help.
Durham Catholic students and families can also speak to our board support staff directly by calling our Social Work Access Line and leaving a voicemail with their contact information. One of our mental health professionals will call back and provide support. Note that this is not a crisis line and is not monitored 24/7.

Adult and Continuing Education
Prepare for Work or Post-Secondary with Employment Training Programs |
Earning high school credits while training for new job opportunities, or while continuing to work at your current job, can be achieved with the help of Employment Preparation and Training Programs at the Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre.
The wide range of programs are available to adults 18 years of age or older and include Child Care Assistant Training, Custodial Services Training, and Personal Support Worker Training. These programs offer high school credits, certifications and connections to employers to prepare for the workplace or post-secondary study. A Work-4-Credits program provides employed adult learners who are unable to attend day school the ability to earn high school credits in cooperative education using their current day job, and the Microsoft Office Specialist Training program allows learners to earn credits while working toward MOS certification.
The Child Care Assistant Training Program includes 9 weeks of classroom learning and 9 weeks of on-the-job training at a licensed child care facility. The program is valuable preparation for entry into the field as an early childhood assistant or for post-secondary study as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) or Child Development Practitioner (CDP). Previous participants have moved on to either work in the field or continued their education in college or through an apprenticeship.
There is no cost for tuition but certifications and materials cost $395, and the course includes Standard First Aid and CPR, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training, safe food handling, infection control and more.
Child Care Assistant Program applicants need to pass a literacy test, clear a criminal reference check, and have up-to-date immunizations. Those registering for the program will go through an interview first to ensure they meet the requirements to work in a registered child care facility.
The Personal Support Worker Program is an accredited program and also includes classroom training and a co-op placement, with the majority of students finding jobs when they’ve completed the program. For the 2022-23 school year, all material fees have been waived and students who complete the program earn a work stipend through Ministry funding. There are still openings for the full-time Port Perry day program starting on November 7, 2022, and for the Ajax and Oshawa full-time day programs starting on January 9, 2023. Visit www.con-ed.ca/psw to register for upcoming orientation dates.
The next session for the Custodial Services Training Program will begin on November 10, 2022 at the Oshawa campus. This program prepares individuals with the skills necessary for entry-level Custodial positions. Students in the program will learn about safety protocols, cleaning procedures, use of tools and become trained by knowledgeable professionals in the industry. A fee of $450 includes certifications and materials.
Anyone aged 18 or older and not currently enrolled in secondary school is welcome to register at the education centre. A program guide can be downloaded from the Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre website www.con-ed.ca.
