Indigenous Education in Action

Indigenous Education Highlights

It's been a busy few weeks as students and staff across DCDSB have continued to engage in Indigenous Education.

Please see the stories below to learn more:

DCDSB Recognizes Louis Riel Day

On November 14, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) raised the the Métis flag at Catholic Education Centre to acknowledge Louis Riel Day. Representatives from the Oshawa-Durham Métis Council joined the flag raising and celebration, along with students from St. Christopher Catholic School.

Louis Riel Day is held every year on November 16 which is the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885. During that year, Riel led Métis people in the Northwest Resistance, which was a stand against the Government of Canada because it was encroaching on Métis rights and the Métis way-of-life. Despite this oppression that occurred because of these conflicts, many Métis people have preserved their culture and traditions and passed it on to current generations.

Resources

DCDSB Indigenous Education Resources and Ancestry Self-Identification

We encourage students with First Nations, Métis and Inuit ancestry to voluntarily self-identify. Proof of ancestry is not required. By self-identifying, you help to monitor the success of the programs and services we offer and help identify ways we support the success of Indigenous students in our schools.

Parents and guardians of students (under the age of 18 years) or students (18 years and older) with First Nations, Métis and Inuit ancestry can self-identify by completing the form here.

Visit the Indigenous Education webpage for more information.

Métis Student Bursary Program

The Métis Student Bursary Program provides bursaries to Métis students at 43 Ontario post-secondary institutions. Application deadlines are school-specific, and bursary recipients are announced in the winter. Students may reapply for bursaries and/or scholarships each year when they register for school. The funding amount of the bursaries will vary based on the funding available each year.

For eligibility and application deadlines, please visit the Métis Nation of Ontario website.

Canadian Indigenous Bursaries

The Government of Canada has compiled a search tool to assist Indigenous students with accessing post-secondary financial supports across the country. This includes bursaries and scholarships offered by governments, universities, colleges, private and public companies, individual Canadians, organizations and more.

Interested students can filter by province, area of study, institution, and eligibility requirements to ensure they search for the bursary, scholarship or incentive that is right for them.

Please click here to learn more and use the search tool.
