April Highlighted Fuel

Electricity can be used to power all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles directly from the power grid. Vehicles running on electricity produce no tailpipe emissions. The only emissions that can be attributed to electric vehicles are those generated in the production process at the power plant. The electric grid is an easily accessible driving energy.

Electricity used to power vehicles is generally provided by the electricity grid and stored in the vehicle’s batteries. Fuel cells are being explored as a way to use electricity generated on board the vehicle to power electric motors. Unlike batteries, fuel cells convert chemical energy from hydrogen into electricity. Home recharging of electric vehicles (EVs) is as simple as plugging them into an electric outlet.

Electric School Bus Adoption Leads to Award for Indiana's Hamilton Southeastern Schools

Hamilton Southeastern Schools district leaders in Indianapolis prioritize a drive toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

That commitment was recognized earlier this month when the district was named 2026 School Bus Fleet of the Year by Drive Clean Indiana, the state’s clean cities coalition, recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy, during the organization’s annual Breakfast of Champions in Indianapolis.

The March 11 recognition occurred alongside Work Truck Week, where industry stakeholders gathered to celebrate advancements in clean transportation. The Breakfast of Champions featured a keynote address by four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, underscoring the broader connection between performance, innovation, and energy.

What role will renewable natural gas (RNG) and biofuels play in long-term decarbonization?

RNG and biofuels provide an immediate and scalable pathway to emissions reduction, particularly for fleets that are not yet ready to electrify. Because they can often be used with existing vehicles and infrastructure, they offer a lower barrier to entry.

In some cases, RNG can even achieve negative carbon intensity, depending on the feedstock. However, long-term scalability may be constrained by feedstock availability and competing demand across sectors.

These fuels are likely to serve as a bridge and complementary solutions, helping reduce emissions today while zero-emission technologies continue to mature.

Expanded RNG Agreements Across U.S. Fleets

Clean Energy Fuels has announced expanding RNG supply agreements with trucking, waste, and transit fleets across the United States. These deals support both RNG fuel supply and fueling infrastructure, showing momentum in commercial RNG adoption beyond a few state programs.

CHANGES AND UPDATES

  • Sensor Removal: Manufacturers are moving away from traditional DEF urea quality sensors in favor of alternative technologies, such as NOx sensors, to meet emission compliance.
  • Reduced "Limp Mode": New guidance for 2027 and later models aims to eliminate sudden speed losses and shutdowns when DEF tanks run low or sensors fail.
  • Existing Equipment: Software updates for existing vehicles are being rolled out to reduce harsh engine derating (power reductions) caused by DEF system faults.
  • Impact: The changes address widespread complaints from farmers and truckers regarding safety and productivity losses due to, for instance, in-field, sudden speed restrictions.
  • Continued Operation: While the rules around the sensors are changing, the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems and the need for DEF remain a part of modern diesel engine operations.
