Dear DCI School Community,
DCI continues to celebrate our Hispanic/Latino/a/x/e staff, students and families this week as we head into our cultural event, La Gran Fiesta, on Saturday, Oct. 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.! We are so excited for this celebration and we want to invite our community to share a dish from your country and contribute to our potluck. If you have any questions about the potluck, please contact Brian Garcia, Family Engagement Liaison.
Every week of Hispanic Heritage month, we are highlighting the stories of our Hispanic/Latino/a/x/e staff and students. They are sharing their pride and excitement for this month by providing a snapshot into their cultures. This week, Ms. Eugenia Reyes, one of our EL Teachers, shares her journey to the U.S.
In 1998, I embarked on a life-changing journey from the warm, bustling streets of San Salvador, El Salvador, to the diverse and expansive landscapes of the United States. Along with my husband and 2 little children, clutching the hands of my missionary Baptist parents, who were filled with a profound sense of purpose and anticipation for what lay ahead.
My parents’ work within the church introduced me to a diverse mosaic of individuals, which fueled my curiosity and understanding of different cultures and perspectives. This exposure played a crucial role as I learned to navigate my own identity, blending my rich Salvadoran heritage with the new American lifestyle.
Reflecting on this journey, I am deeply grateful for the resilience, faith, and hope that carried my family through this monumental transition. It taught me the essence of adaptability and the importance of staying true to one’s roots while embracing the new.
My story is one of many, woven into the rich tapestry of the immigrant experience—a testament to the courage and determination that defines countless families who venture into new horizons in pursuit of a better future.
Thank you, Eugenia, for being open and sharing a bit of yourself with our DCI community! Our collective voices and stories shape who we are as a socially just community here at DCI.
