PLEASE NOTE: The Dispatch Will Move to Bi-Weekly in January

Thank you so much for your interest and readership in the Dispatch! Starting January 9th, the Dispatch will be sent to your inbox every other Thursday, instead of weekly. If a news item needs to be shared between editions, there will be a stand-alone email shared with the community.

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! As we continue to move into the holiday season, DCI is starting its recruitment season! On Friday, we will host our second Buddy Day with our member school, Mundo Verde PCS J.F. Cook’s campus, welcoming 30+ 5th graders to DCI; you can catch us at both the high school (Dec. 7 – Booth #3008) and PK3 – Grade 8 (Dec. 14 – Booth #1205) EdFESTs; we will host our first DCI Information Session on December 18, which will be virtual, and many more events and opportunities between now, the opening of the My School DC Lottery and its close to learn more about our amazing school. As we share information with future families, we encourage you to spread the word and share your DCI points of pride with your DC friends and family – maybe even divulge during holiday and New Year’s Eve parties!

One of our points of pride is a keystone event that we host this time of year – Buddy Days! We host 5th graders from all of our member schools on Fridays, December through February, and each student has the opportunity to team up with a current DCI 6th grader to learn the ins and outs of their daily routine and schedule at DCI. We love having student visitors and this is such a fun way for upcoming 6th graders to check out the school and get candid, peer-to-peer information about DCI.

In addition to spreading the word about DCI, we hope our community will support our year-end fundraising campaign. On Giving Tuesday, we launched a monthly donor challenge to unlock a $5,000 challenge fund offered by a generous DCI donor. We are only 5 new monthly donors away from reaching our goal by tomorrow, Friday, December 6th. Please help us reach our goal and multiply your impact! Support our year-end campaign here - we welcome donations of any size!

Key Update to the Student & Family Handbook

We are grateful to our MS students who brought to our attention several instances of gendered pronouns found in our Student & Family Handbook. 77 students, families and staff petitioned to "change all of the parts in the DCI school handbook that are in the format of s/he or she/he to they. They is a neutral pronoun that can be used neutrally to encompass more pronouns without having to write them. Making this change would make things more inclusive for the non-binary and gender non-conforming students. Part of DCIs mission is to make the school more inclusive, and a community for all students, and making this change will help represent it." We couldn't agree more. The updated handbook is now on our website and can be found here. Thank you for your advocacy!
