Dear DCI School Community,

As we near the end of the year, we’re grateful for all the ways our community learns, grows, and supports one another.

This week, we launched our Open Doors to the World end-of-year campaign, starting with a Giving Tuesday match and wonderful early momentum—thank you to everyone who has already contributed. Many of DCI’s most meaningful student experiences happen beyond the classroom, and this campaign helps raise funds for those opportunities. Invest in student life at DCI today!

As we head into the holidays, please also help us spread the word about our monthly food pantry: the next Grab & Go Community Market is December 18 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m., offering free fresh food and essential items. We warmly welcome any DCI family—or any community member—who could use extra support to stop by.

Thank you for your continued partnership and generosity.

Shout Outs!

Dragon TV Students Earn Capital Emmys Student Production Awards!

Per a recent announcement on WJLA-TV, our CP Video/Dragon TV students have earned four Capital Emmys Student Production Awards — sometimes colloquially referred to as Student Emmys because they’re awarded by the same organization that awards professional Emmys (the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences). This is a record for our CP Video program, and DCI students earned 50 percent of the total number of awards given across the DMV.

The winners are:

  • Solo Storyteller (the same category I won an Emmy for when I was in the industry) - “Ana Xiao” by Ana Inskeep
  • Non-Fiction Short Form - “My Family’s Deportation Story” by Santiago Campos
  • Public Affairs/Community Service - “Dear Mr. President: We Want Statehood” by Sukey Hayden and Joe Book
  • Feature News Report - “Chef Seng” by Morgan Hawkins (a Dragon TV alumna)

The school will receive a crystal pillar for each winning story, and the students will receive certificates. Way to go, Dragons!

Teacher / Staff Shout Out!

Check out this week’s student to staff shout outs:

I want to shout out Mr. Gaskins because he has been a great science teacher and has taught me so much science. He has been doing a great job of teaching me because I know much more science than before school when I barely knew any science.

I wanna give a shout out to Mr. Leclere because he is a funny teacher, but he is also very disciplined and he is focused when it's time to work.-- Alani Villatoro

Please consider submitting a “shout out” to recognize your students’ teachers, staff or one another. These will be included in each bi-weekly edition of the Dispatch. Thanks!

December 15th: YourEyes Vision Screenings at DCI

YourEyes is providing free vision screenings for our students. Please complete this form by Friday, December 5th in order for your student to participate. Clear vision is essential for learning. Students who can see well are more likely to stay engaged, succeed in class, and feel confident. If your student is referred after the screening, they will be seen by an ophthalmologist and receive two free pairs of glasses. Thank you for your commitment to your student’s health and wellness. Please email Jania Washington with any questions about the screenings.

DCI Joins Capital Math Collective + DC Kids and Schools Campaign

This month, the CitySchools Collaborative announced the Capital Math Collective, a new public-private partnership to build a districtwide effort for math excellence and position DC as a national leader in math. DCI will join EmpowerK12’s DC Math Hub, DCPS, and fellow charter schools to tackle our students’ most pressing math challenges and strengthen math learning across the city.

We were also invited earlier this school year to join the newly formed DC Kids and Schools Coalition, a national campaign focused on elevating DC’s often-untold education story—one of innovation, academic progress, and community-driven results. We’re proud to be part of this coalition alongside partners such as Friendship Public Charter School, Thurgood Marshall Academy, CityWorks, CitySchools Collaborative, D.C. Policy Center, ElectEd, and EmpowerK12, working together to unite families, educators, and civic leaders to strengthen public education and shift the narrative about DC’s schools.

We’re honored to be part of both efforts—and to be on the front lines of reshaping the national conversation about what’s possible in public education.
