Hydrogen (H2) is a potentially emission-free alternative fuel that can be produced using domestic resources. Although not widely used as a transportation fuel, government and industry researchers are working on the advancement of clean, economical, and safe hydrogen production and fuel-cell electric vehicles.
Hydrogen is locked up in enormous quantities in water (H2O), hydrocarbons (such as methane, CH4), and other organic matter. Efficiently producing hydrogen from these compounds is one of the challenges of using hydrogen as a fuel.

How are alternative fuels used in heavy-duty vehicle applications among fleets today, particularly Class 8 vehicles?
Various alternative fuels, including renewable diesel, renewable natural gas, electricity, and hydrogen, are being deployed in heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) fleets, including Class 8 truck fleets, around the United States. Note that we do not endorse one manufacturer over another.
Refer to the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Case Studies database for case studies and success stories pertaining to Class 8 trucks using alternative fuels.

Cummins has and is currently developing electric powertrain and battery pack technology for medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) trucks and vehicles. For more information on Cummins’ technology, you may refer to the Accelera by Cummins website, which is a new Cummins brand (as of 2023). You may be particularly interested in the Accelera ePowertrain Systems and Battery Systems pages.
Additional Tools and Resources
Although specific to refuse trucks, you may refer to the AFDC Fleet Application for Refuse Collection Vehicles page, which provides an overview of vehicles ideal for the adoption of alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies. During the CC&C September 2025 virtual information sessions, SMEs discussed that over 60% of all refuse trucks that are sold in the United States are natural gas.
Furthermore, you may view the State of Sustainable Fleets 2025 Market Brief, which provides a summary of the major developments for fleets in commercial transportation and alternative fuels. Additionally, please view the State of Sustainable Fleets webpage for insights into the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles in the public, private, and for-hire fleets, including school, municipal/shuttle, urban delivery, refuse, utility, transit, short-haul, and long-haul sectors.
