September Highlighted Fuel

Did You Know?

  • Made from corn, grasses, and agricultural crops grown across Indiana and the Midwest -- reducing dependence on imported petroleum with every gallon produced.
  • Ethanol blends oxygenate gasoline and reduce harmful air pollutants -- including carbon monoxide and particulate matter -- helping Indiana communities meet air quality standards.
  • Indiana ranks among the top corn-producing states in the nation. Ethanol demand directly supports local farmers, rural economies, and agricultural jobs across all 92 counties.
  • Low-level ethanol blends like E10 work in any gasoline vehicle with no modifications. E85 requires a flex fuel vehicle -- and over 8 million FFVs are already on U.S. roads today.

IndyCar to Introduce Updated Shell 100% Renewable Race Fuel in 2027

INDYCAR and Shell announced Aug. 21 that an updated formulation of Shell's 100% Renewable Race Fuel* will be introduced for the 2027 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.

The new fuel, announced during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., builds on the renewable race fuel program launched in 2023 and continues INDYCAR's commitment to advancing innovation and sustainability in motorsports.

Beginning in 2027, all NTT INDYCAR SERIES entries will compete using an updated fuel formulation supplied by Shell. The new fuel incorporates a significant portion of domestically sourced renewable ethanol produced from the waste stream of a grain mixture-based distilling process and is blended with additional renewable components to create a 100% Renewable Race Fuel.

Member Spotlight

Logan Waddle

As Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is a valued Drive Clean Indiana member, we thought now would be a great time to speak with Logan Waddle, the Sustainability Program Leader for Penske Entertainment, the parent company of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and INDYCAR. His focus is to reduce emissions through targeted, impactful operational shifts related to transportation efficiency, energy reduction, and waste diversion. He gave Drive Clean Indiana the inside scoop on everything the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is doing to become the most environmentally friendly racing venue in the world!

Q: What projects/initiatives have you worked on related to sustainable fuels or clean transportation?

A: “IMS deploys renewable diesel in all operational equipment and transporters within the INDYCAR trucking fleet. To accomplish this, we work with Penske Transportation Solutions to procure the renewable diesel supply and deliver it to Indianapolis. The fuel itself is a drop-in product, meaning no infrastructure modifications were required to utilize the fuel while reducing emissions by up to 85%.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the first and only current North American racing series to be powered by 100% renewable race fuel. The fuel, developed and produced by Shell, has been used in all INDYCAR events since 2023. This switch from traditional racing fuel required in-depth analysis by experts at Shell, and rigorous testing from Honda and Chevrolet to understand the new compound and ensure it could meet the grueling demands of INDYCAR racing events.

IMS has installed 10 electric vehicle charging stations around the campus to support the EV transition. Two of these chargers, installed in partnership with Drive Clean Indiana, are available for public use at the IMS Museum. This project requires collaboration between DCI, IMS, Penske Energy, AES Indiana, and Miller-Eads, our electrical contractors. By installing this infrastructure, IMS is advancing clean transportation opportunities for both public and internal use in the future. IMS is powered by 100% renewable electricity, meaning users of these chargers are fueling with zero-emission energy."

Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of these projects?

A: “The most rewarding part of these efforts is the connection to the deep-rooted history of IMS surrounding automotive innovation and technology. IMS was built as a proving ground for new technologies in 1909, and through sustainability efforts, we are continuing to push the limits of what is possible in the transportation industry by piloting new technologies that both meet the needs of consumers while also reducing emissions.”

Q: What’s next for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

A: “IMS will continue pushing toward 2030 targets surrounding operational emission reductions, renewable energy, and zero waste events.  Our next milestones to achieve these targets are powering all stationary equipment (generators, light towers, etc.) with renewable diesel, continuing to retrofit and install energy-saving systems across the campus, and expanding upon successful waste diversion efforts to minimize waste to landfill.”
