A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated items to the DCIU Food Drive! This year we donated 1,342 lbs. of food to the community! That number almost doubled our 2018 donation of 647 lbs. We are proud to have such generous and thoughtful staff!
Spotlight: Professional Development
As we closed out the 2019 year, we couldn't help but take a look back at some of DCIU's impressive accomplishments. With over 370 workshops and training opportunities provided for professionals in the 2018-2019 school year, its no wonder the DCIU Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning (CIPL) department continues to thrive! With successful and driven leaders conducting a wide variety of courses, DCIU meets the needs of local educators seeking professional development.

Not only does CIPL provide training and workshops, the Professional Development team also strives to partner with other organizations to spotlight important cultural content relevant to our work. On Wednesday December 4, 2019, the Delaware County Transition Council in collaboration with Delaware County Right to Education Task Force hosted a screening of the documentary by award winning filmmaker Dan Habib “Intelligent Lives." The film follows three adults with intellectual disabilities as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. The film challenges the perceptions of what it means to be intelligent and it points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment, and intimate relationships.
Over 30 parents, teachers and administrators braved the weather and participated in this opportunity. They viewed the 70 minute film and participated in small group discussions related to the themes of the film. By all accounts, the evening was a resounding success! Special recognition goes to Laurie Newsome in the Professional Development Department for planning and coordinating this event!

Cookie and Ornament Decorating at Marple

On December 12, students in the Early Intervention program at the Marple Education Center spent the morning decorating cookies and making tree ornaments. Teachers prepared stations for the students so that they could easily decorate their cookies and ornaments while enjoying the company of their friends and teachers. Once decorating concluded, students hung their ornaments on garland around the cafeteria and enjoyed eating their delicious cookies!
Marple Education Center Holiday Show

On December 19, Marple Education Center held its annual Holiday Show. The show featured each classroom performing a song or dance to holiday classics, along with newer favorites and even original pieces. Students were excited as they performed in front of their teachers and family for this special event. For many of the performances, the entire room joined in and sang along. The concert was the perfect way to finish the year with fun and excitement!

Sharon Hill Winter Concert

On Friday December 20, students in the Sharon Hill Head Start program performed in their annual Winter Concert. Anthony Stewart was the emcee for the program and excitidely introduced each classroom. The children performed well known holiday classics like "Jingle Bell Rock" and modern songs like "I'm a Little Snowman." The Academy Park High School Concert Band accompanied their performances and ended the show with "Kwanzaa Kwanzaa."
Morton Gingerbread Contest

On Friday December 20, Morton staff teamed up to compete in a Gingerbread House contest. Teams had only 15 minutes and limited tools to create the best gingerbread house! It was a frantic 15 minutes but most teams were able to complete the task. After all was said and done, the creations were unique and fun and staff enjoyed the team-building exercise.
DCTS Kind Initiative
Students at DCTS Folcroft started their brand new KIND Initiative with the goal of creating awareness and inclusiveness both at school and outside of school. A group of student leaders, as well as DCTS Folcroft principal Dan Palmer, will present to their classmates on the importance of kindness toward one another and how one action can have ripple effects through the community. All of DCIU could follow their lead! Keep up with the KIND Initiative as they pursue new projects throughout the year!
