August is National Wellness Month

August is observed as National Wellness Month, which focuses heavily on self-care, stress management, and emotional or mental well-being as people transition from summer into fall. It covers a broad definition of wellness that includes physical activity, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness and emotional health. The observance is aimed at anyone wanting to build healthier habits. Small changes make a big difference. These transitions from summer to fall are sometimes challenging and especially important as youth return to the stressors and structure of the school year. This month is the time to prepare for, establish good routines around and identify community and school services/resources to support youth mental health. Read more below.

Preparing for Back to School

The start of a new school can be a time of transition that can produce both excitement and stress. Preparing for Back to School may involve setting a child "up for success" with materials, resources and services. New clothes, school supplies and lunch boxes are just the start. New routines, relationships and requirements can highlight existing issues and bring new issues to the forefront. Consider plans such as a 504 or IEP to address academic challenges. Identifying mental health needs for students now may also be beneficial.

  • 50% of individuals with mental health conditions experience symptoms during adolescence. Puberty is a vulnerable time for the onset of conditions like anxiety, depression, mood disorders and more.

  • Comprehensive screening can help families and schools identify students who need support and connect them with appropriate resources. Early (and ongoing) screening and intervention for mental health needs can improve outcomes and build resilience in children and adolescents.

  • Mental health and other support services can be accessed through School-Based Health Centers, open to all students, regardless of insurance or ability to pay. https://www.dethrives.com/SBHC

Resource Spotlight: Child Mobile

Response & Stabilization Services

Delaware is working to reduce children and families going to the ER and calling 911. Families of children in need should be directed to the MRSS crisis hotline. In addition to reducing ER and 911 contact, calling the hotline will also provide children/youth access to 45 days of follow-up supportive services.

Residency Training: Christiana Care Med Peds

DCPAP provided the first in a series of residency training sessions to the Christiana Care Med Peds program. Dr. Friedland and team welcomed Mindy and Dr. Pazuniak to offer an overview of DCPAP services and a presentation around Assessing and Managing Behavioral Disturbances. DCPAP will provide additional sessions throughout the academic year to help the team strengthen their skill and comfort in managing the mental health needs of their patients, increase access to support, and meet their ACGME requirements.
