Facilitator: Yael S. Lipton, MS, MCHES, Training and Curriculum Development Specialist. She has been creating, directing, and evaluating health education programming for over 15 years.

T raining Overview: DCPCA's Health Literacy Training will improve participants' skills in educating patients. This training is geared toward any non-clinical staff who assist individuals in cancer screening, diagnostics, or treatment.

Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Trainer Yael Lipton will cover evidence-based tools for communicating with patients most effectively in a way that adapts to their level of health literacy.

Through group exercises and practical demonstrations, the training will focus on tools for: 1) limiting and tailoring health information through a person-centered approach; and 2) using plain language and the teach-back method so that patients are more likely and able to act on the health information.

Who Should Attend: Any non-clinical staff who assist patients in cancer screening, diagnostics, or treatment. This includes: 
  • Patient Navigators
  • Care Coordinators
  • Community Health Workers
