Webinar Series: Intentionally Integrating Equity into SDOH Interventions
Date: Tuesday, October 6th
Time: 3:00-4:15pm ET
In the next edition of the Intentionally Integrating Equity into SDOH Interventions webinar series, three health equity champions will discuss advancing equity and anti-racism through research and evaluation. Healthcare has a long history of perpetuating racial disparities and inequitable outcomes, especially through research and evaluation. Infamous studies, like the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis, have illustrated the unethical treatment and mistreatment towards communities of color within healthcare. With this legacy, research and evaluation efforts in social determinants of health (SDOH) interventions must be vigilant to not perpetuate inequity and/or racism.
During this webinar, panelists will highlight equity-oriented methods used in SDOH research and evaluation, discuss best practices and lessons learned, and explore the opportunities to integrate equity into SDOH research and evaluation efforts in our current context. Topics will include:
- Current approaches to research and evaluation that has advanced or stifled racial health equity
- Bias that occurs within SDOH research and evaluation that is harmful to communities of color
- Strategies that both elevate racial health equity and center the needs and interests of communities served
- The capability of research and evaluation to promote justice by influencing practice, policy, and systems change
Panelists and attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss how equity-oriented research and evaluation is a key component to responding and rebuilding during the COVID-19 pandemic. We encourage those who are interested in the intersection of social needs and health equity work to attend, ask questions, and share their experiences
Part 1: Equity’s Role in SDOH Interventions – Implementation – April 7, 2020
Part 2: Equity’s Role in SDOH Interventions – Advocacy and Systems Change – June 4, 2020
Part 3: Equity’s Role in SDOH Interventions – Data Democratization – August 20th, 2020
Part 4: Equity’s Role in SDOH Interventions – Evaluation – October 6, 2020

Preparing Primary Care Champions to Identify and Treat HCV: An ECHO Initiative
It is estimated that more than 53,000 Maryland/DC residents carry the hepatitis C virus (HCV), yet fewer than one-third have been treated for it. This is a missed opportunity, as HCV is curable in nearly all infected individuals. To reduce this disparity, the CDC and USPSTF recently updated their testing guidelines to recommend one-time HCV testing for ALL adults in the US and more frequent testing for those who are pregnant or who have ongoing risk factors.
With our evidence-based HCV TeleECHO program, you and your colleagues can enhance your expertise and clinical confidence in the diagnosis and delivery of HCV care. Each 1-hour virtual session, held on alternating second and fourth Tuesdays at 12:00 pm from September 29 through March 2021, will consist of:
- A brief didactic presentation by a subject-matter expert in HCV identification and care
- Two or 3 de-identified case presentations
- Discussion among a diverse group of participating clinicians and faculty experts
Project ECHO® programs result in improved patient retention, better patient outcomes, and enhanced joy in work among providers. This CE/CME activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ by Continuing Professional Education, MedStar Health.
