Health Literacy Training Road Show - July 18-20, 2018
Thank you to the following health centers for participating in our DCPCA-sponsored Health Literacy Training Road Show, July 18-20, 2018: Family and Medical Counseling Service (FMCS); So Others Might Eat (SOME); La Clinica del Pueblo (LCDP), Whitman-Walker Health, and the Patient Navigators Peer Group.

The Health Literacy Training Road Show's purpose was to help health center staff build skills in the area of more effectively educating their patients. The training was focused on health care topics related to cancer prevention and chronic disease care. Our training session for Patient Navigators was free for attendees thanks to the generous support of DC Health and the DC3C Project! Finally, thank you to our facilitator Yael Lipton for conducting a great week of training.

Training Spotlight : Conducting Culturally-Competent Nutrition Education for Patients Training

  • Facilitator: Advocates for Better Children's Diets (ABCD) is a non-profit organization founded in 1995 that has conducted multiple federal and local projects to promote healthy eating and physical activity for children and their families. Nancy Chapman and Stephanie Johnson have expertise in food and nutrition and extensive experience in public health policy development, program design, evaluation, and training. Nancy and Stephanie are both registered dietitians and have expanded the organization to work on nutrition issues for those of all ages.

Training Overview: Meeting your patients where they are at is the best way to get them to a healthier place. During this two-hour training, you will learn active listening and motivational interviewing skills that will help you understand your patients' needs so you can develop a care plan that is achievable when they go home. This training is focused on communicating nutritional guidance to those patients with diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and other chronic diseases.   Read more

Training Overview : The Quality Improvement (QI) Boot Camp is geared towards any health center staff that support quality improvement, including both clinical and administrative staff. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss key QI principles including the Model for Improvement, PDSA process, SMART goals, and quality measures. We will apply the concepts learned to real-life case studies through hands-on group exercises.
