Program Spotlight

New DCPN Programs

The two newest agencies to join the Dane Crisis Provider Network are specialized services allowing for the DCPN to extend their services to different populations.

PROJECT RESPECT

Arc Community Services, Inc.

Eligibility and Access:

  • Adults and juveniles, domestic and foreign born with sexual exploitation
  • Spanish language staff available
  • Persons can self-refer or be referred from another agency.

Best way to contact staff:

Main office: 608-283-6453

After hours: 608-283-6430

What the program does:

Provides complex case management, victim advocacy and accompaniment, crisis intervention, mental health therapy, peer support group, clubhouse to work on housing search, job search and other tasks, art group. Resources available include: clothing, food pantry, some emergency funds for housing, utilities, transportation etc. Some community support and fieldwork. Maintains a coordinated community response group to build active resources and referrals network.

Common Misconceptions:

Good to remember that while there are some known precursors to exploitation, no two stories are the same. Persons appearing ambivalent and accepting of situation may still want our assistance. Best practices: explore grooming; utilizing public health model with goal of addressing conditions that support exploitation.  Our services are voluntary and confidential. We provide services for alternatives to incarceration when requested.

IDD CRISIS STABILIZATION

Waisman Center

Type of Service:

Crisis Linkage and Follow up

Note that IDD Crisis Stabilizations is embedded in the Waisman Center’s Community TIES behavior support program.

Hours of Operation:

8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Eligibility and Access:

  • have an intellectual or developmental disability
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • resident of Dane County
  • be recipient of or eligible for WI MA Home and Community Based Services for persons with IDD
  • no cost to individuals as services are billed to MA Crisis

Best way to contact staff:

608-280-2624

What the program does:

Waisman’s Crisis Stabilization services are classified as “Crisis Linkage and Follow-Up”. These are short-term, person-centered supports designed to help stabilize individuals who are at risk of entering or experiencing a mental health crisis.

  • Initial meeting in the person’s home or another community setting
  • Assessment of individual’s current situation and immediate and short-term support needs
  • Engaging the person in developing a person-centered crisis plan that enhances individual and family coping skills
  • Facilitating access/referrals to additional IDD specific or IDD-informed behavior health or community resources.
  • Follow-up consultation and coordination with adult long-term care providers (e.g. Family Care, IRIS)

Common Misconceptions:

Many adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities are eligible for long-term care through the state’s Medicaid Waiver programs. There may be a misconception that these programs (which include Family Care, Family Care Partnership, and IRIS) provide “wrap around” or comprehensive care. In fact, Family Care and IRIS in general do not fund acute or mental health care (or crisis care) and service providers have to be a member of the Managed Care Organization’s network or a registered IRIS provider. The Waisman Crisis Stabilization program is designed to help individuals with IDD access crisis mental health care when needed, and to help Dane County mental health providers better understand some of the unique aspects of supporting people with IDD through mental or behavioral health crises.

Handbook Highlight

System Meetings

A system meeting brings together various individuals involved in supporting a person receiving services. If you think a meeting might be helpful but are unsure who should be involved or just want support with the process, DCDHS staff can help!

Consider a system meeting in situations such as:

  • An individual in crisis is having frequent contacts with various services (e.g., law enforcement, hospitals, crisis programs, etc.)
  • An individual is hospitalized for an extended period (to plan for discharge)
  • There is a transition in care (e.g., to a different case management agency or level of care, into a residential placement, etc.)
  • There are concerns about duplication of services across multiple providers, or provider efforts that may be conflicting
  • Staff triangulation is arising
  • The client requests a meeting among the providers they are working with

DCPN’s best practices for system meetings are listed below. For tips and tricks / more information about how this looks in practice, check out the DCPN handbook, page 9.
