DDRC Art & Soul Exhibit - Now through August 7
Enjoy the artistic talents of individuals receiving DDRC services at the DDRC Art & Soul show running now through August 7. Art & Soul, a program of DDRC Volunteer Services, matches local volunteer artists with individuals receiving DDRC services who are interested in artistic expression. Five DDRC artists participating in the program contributed several dozen pieces of their artwork to the show, much of it available for sale, including pieces created in pastels, acrylics, watercolor and pencil.
See the show at the APEX Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Boulevard, in Arvada, with viewing Monday-Thursday 8:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 p.m. If you’d like to share your talents with the Art & Soul program, contact April Richey at

Summer Unified Softball Games – Come Cheer DDRC Teams
|
Join us for a free, fun night at the fields! DDRC’s Therapeutic Learning/Recreation will have two teams participating in the City of Lakewood’s Unified Softball League. Unified sports bring players with and without disabilities together in one team to compete with other unified teams. Come to cheer on the DDRC Cruisers and DDRC Grease Lightening, along with the other teams.
Games are played at Lakewood Park, located at Kipling and Cedar Streets, across from the Federal Center. Next games are

Annual Indoor Legislative BBQ –
Tuesday, August 27
Individuals, families, supporters, volunteers and friends connected to DDRC are invited to the August 27, Indoor Legislative BBQ. Join us at this free event and make your voice heard.
Hosted by the four largest nonprofits in Jefferson county, this event is an opportunity to hear from congressional and state legislators, county officials, area mayors and candidates. It is also a chance for them to hear
from you and us
about issues important to our nonprofits and the community. The BBQ is organized and hosted by DDRC, Family Tree, Jefferson Center and Seniors’ Resource Center.
The event is held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. 6
th
Ave., Golden. Check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. Mingling with officials and candidates begins thereafter, followed by buffet dinner and program, and ending at 7:30 p.m.

Rockin’ The Runway Together
was a wonderful demonstration of inclusion of people of all abilities in a fun event that brought people together to enjoy fashion, music, and camaraderie - and most importantly, to showcase abilities, support inclusion and create community connections. The Dedication of DDRC Employees is Key to Our Strength!
|
|
DDRC’s Annual Years of Service event in June honored employees who marked their 5, 10, 15, 20 and up to 45-year work anniversary. Those honored are pictured above. Representatives of the Board of Directors and the Executive Team were on hand to thank employees. Beverly Winters, Executive Director, spoke of the dedication and important work that employees do every day to fulfill our mission, goals and values, and to improve opportunities for those we serve. A creative event planning team, led by the DDRC HR Department, made the experience special with a “Hollywood Walk of Stars” theme, a lovely lunch and personalized recognition of employees.
Leslie Smith, Support Specialist with Walters Adult Vocational Services, was thanked for her 45 years of service, the longest of this year’s group. Beverly was recognized for her 35-year career at DDRC. Beverly and Leslie are pictured below, along with the employees who coordinated the event.

Crawfish Boil - Cooking for a Cause
DDRC was excited to take part in the 2019 Crawfish Boil hosted in June at the Lariat Lodge Brewing in Evergreen. We were honored to be selected as the nonprofit recipient of the event proceeds. It was a fun affair, with fresh crawfish flown-in, pots of steaming, fragrant broth, many people digging into the delicious food and lots of conversation in a beautiful setting.
Huge thanks to Mike Hess and his team of incredible organizers and helpers who made it happen, and for their generosity and recognition of DDRC’s mission!

DDRC Speaks to the Importance of Early Childhood – and
One of Our Own is Recognized.
|
|
Triad
, the Early Childhood Council for Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Jefferson counties, seeks to improve quality, access, and equity outcomes for young children through policy, finance and service delivery. Beverly Winters, DDRC Executive Director, was Triad’s featured speaker at their Annual Children’s Champions Awards event in June. Her comments shed light on the important efforts of those working in this arena, particularly in the very earliest years of children’s lives.
Tiffany Sharpe, DDRC Early Intervention Physical Therapist, was recognized as a Children’s Champion Award Nominee. Tiffany is always looking to expand what she can offer as support to families. She helped set up children with developmental delays and motor impairments to receive a “Go Baby Go” adapted power wheels car. Then, she worked with students at a local high school to further adapt these cars to each child’s specific needs. With the adapted car, one parent noted that for the first time, their child was given the freedom to move. Tiffany also has strong coaching skills to empower families and a drive for knowledge. She even took the
optional
advanced Pediatric Certified Specialist Exam - and passed!

June 2019 marks DDRC's 55th year of service. Our supporters, donors and volunteers have been invaluable partners over these years!
We celebrated and thanked them at a reception at the Lakewood Heritage Center. Current and past board members and DDRC executive leaders posed together over the anniversary cake, and all attendees enjoyed mingling and the buffet offerings. It was a delightful evening of connecting to longtime and new supporters, and a great way to start another year of truly meaningful service.

DDRC Employment Support & Empowerment of Individuals with IDD
Taste of Denmark
,
a Lakewood company with whom DDRC coordinates to support individuals in integrated competitive employment, has won the small business award from
Colorado APSE,
Association of People Supporting Employment First, at their annual meeting in June.
Employment First principles assert that everyone has employable strengths and can work in the competitive labor market with the right measures of support, and in jobs well-matched to individual interests, talents and abilities.
DDRC’s Employment Support professionals nominated Ronny Tronoe, owner of Taste of Denmark, for his notable efforts to hire and employ two individuals with IDD; one who has been at the bakery for 11 years and the other for seven years. Ronny is supportive of their inclusion in his workforce and has also helped them outside of their workday lives, understanding that successful employees have a strong support network. Ronny treats all his employees with the same care, concern and respect, and this inclusive orientation will surely influence his other employees and patrons. Thank you, Taste of Denmark and Ronny Tronoe, for being a leader and wonderful example showing that integrated competitive employment works.
