Late last week, a few fiscal data points about Delaware and other states became public and this is worth sharing. It's always wise to 'consider the source' when looking at a 'top ten' of this or that, and review the research strategy. However, I feel the sources here are top-tier and unequivocally reputable.

Key findings from the nationwide survey, Location Matters, reveal that Delaware ranks:

You'll find in the report that overall, Delaware outpaced its neighboring states in the Mid-Atlantic region for most sector types in both the new and mature business categories. Cities were cohorted into one of two categories: Tier 1 cities are major cities in a state, and Tier 2 cities are mid-sized cities usually with a population of less than 50,000. The statewide study ranked each state and highlights each state’s tax favorability performance, including their Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. In Delaware, the two cities ranked in the Location Matters report are Wilmington in the Tier 1 major city category and Dover in the Tier 2 mid-sized city category.

In another study the Tax Foundation recently released, the 2021 Facts & Figures report is also loaded with interesting data. This work provides interesting views of how we are doing and does a credible job comparing the different states, which is not an easy undertaking.

Effective Tax Rates in Delaware

This week, economic data kicks off on Tuesday with job openings figures for March. On Wednesday we’ll learn of consumer price index results for April and federal budget information from April. We wrap up the week on Friday with a number of important statistics, including April retail sales figures, the April import price index, industrial production results from April, and March business inventories data.
