100% Wool Sawtooth Edge Stroud Cloth
NOW BACK IN STOCK!
After a long absence, Stroud cloth is back! Ours is hand-dyed from 100% wool and has the characteristic saw tooth edges. This saw tooth pattern is achieved by “saving” the edges so that the dye cannot penetrate the wool. This cloth is highly desirable for early style blankets and garments. Approximate width is 55-56”. Since this fabric is hand-dyed, there may be some small areas of inconsistent color. Note: Our Stroud cloth is dyed in 10 meter sections so if you order more than this amount, it will be in two pieces.

Heavy Canvas 18th Century Haversacks
Commonly used by both civilians and soldiers through most of the 18th and early 19th century, our canvas haversacks can be used with either colonial or early fur trade reenactments. Made from sturdy canvas and offered in a few sizes and styles. All styles have a nice muslin inner lining. This lining is held in by corner buttons. This allows the liner to be easily removed if desired. Our “tarred” haversack is not done by the conventional process. This tarring has three layers: a waterproof binder, pigment layer, and a lacquer. These layers are hydraulically pressed into canvas to give it the same look and function as old time tarred haversacks.

The Venetian Bead Story
By Peter Francis, Jr
With the possible exception of the Egyptian and Syrian beadmakers of Roman times, no glass bead producers have had as much influence on their contemporaries as those of Venice. Venetian beads have been sent all over the world and have for the last several centuries dominated the trade and tastes in the commodity. These beautiful products of Venice come in an amazing diversity of styles. It has been estimated that well over 100,000 different Venetian bead varieties have been produced and each year the numbers grow, for Venetian artisans are constantly turning out new kinds of beads for their customers. This article summarizes the history of the Venetian bead industry and also discusses its diverse products.
We are pleased to present this 17 page article in its entirety. Peter Francis, Jr. (1945-2002), was a world-renowned bead scholar who was dubbed by the New York Times as the "world’s leading authority on beads." Read this article and we think you'll know why they titled him so.
