5th Annual Maceo Parker Funky New Year at SFJAZZ Center with opening act Deva Mahal, the daughter of legendary blues artist Taj Mahal.

Ring in the New Year with the king of the funky saxophone and one of the primary architects of modern R&B, Maceo Parker. He has led a legendary career, performing with soul legend James Brown and on landmark funk recordings with George Clinton. Maceo made his mark as an essential voice in the powerhouse horns backing James Brown, contributing classic funk solos on some of the Godfather’s iconic hits. He went on to join George Clinton’s moveable funk feast in Parliament/Funkadelic during the ensemble’s most creative era.

Aggregate Space Gallery is pleased to present this selection of video works from our annual open call for time-based media. For the 6th time, we intentionally chose to forgo a themed call so that a cohesive show may be discovered in the relationships between some of the 200+ submissions. This year, the works that stood out were all surreal depictions of personal struggle with outside forces, some via artist confessionals, and some presented more cryptically. The video pieces that will be playing concurrently within Holding Breath each contain one-sided conversations either with an implied partner or no-one at all, often relying on humor as a weapon to disarm the viewer from the frustrations, anxiety, and loneliness under the surface of each piece.

The globe-trotting Dirty Cello band has a brand new album featuring their high-energy take on bluegrass. Toss out the fiddle, grab a cello, add some sweet sweet 3 part harmonies, and you’ve got something new, yet familiar. With a set of songs honed in diverse places like a bluegrass show in China, a beer garden deep in former east Germany, and even the wilds of Southern Oregon, the Dirty Cello bluegrass show is something you’ve never heard.
