Car prices are in check, but get ready for sticker shock on repair bills.

Despite billions in tariff costs for imported autos and parts, new car prices have stayed relatively flat. But the news isn’t as good for car owners taking their vehicles to the repair shop.

The price of car repairs jumped 5% just from July to August, according to the latest Consumer Price Index, the government’s key inflation measure. That’s the largest one-month increase on record, and the cost of repairs is now up 15% compared to a year ago.

New 2024 Credit & Debit Card Swipe Fee Totals Higher Than Previous Estimates

Data suggests that fees charged by banks and card networks were more than 25% higher than other estimates.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — New data shows that swipe fees charged by big banks and card networks to process credit and debit card transactions in 2024 were higher than previously reported, according to the Merchants Payments Coalition (MPC).

The new "State of the Industry Report" by payments consulting firm CMSPI found that swipe fees totaled more than $236 billion last year, more than 25% higher than other estimates.

"These numbers show just how broken the payments market really is and that swipe fees are an even larger burden on small businesses and consumers than we knew previously," MPC Executive Committee member and FMI — the Food Industry Association Chief Public Policy Officer Jennifer Hatcher said. "With Visa and Mastercard setting prices where all banks charge the same swipe fees, the impact of swipe fees keeps going up.

Sick of Your Credit Processing Fees?

Co-Card has been a member of our service group since 2000. They have helped members save thousands on their credit processing fees in that time.

Now, they are doubling down on their partnership with NYSASSRS & RSGDA. They are now offering to PAY YOUR MEMBERSHIP fee if they are able to review your credit processing, save you money, and help you access funding options that will close more sales for your shop. On top of that, they now have a
Rewards Program for you, the merchant!

It's not just Auto Service and Body Shops that they support. Co-Card is also rolling out programs built specifically for C-Stores, too. They are genuinely looking to help small businesses grow and the Auto Service Industry to thrive in NY.

New Training & Certification Policy:

Testers Must Score 70% or Better to Pass: Effective 10/01/2025

All trainees must score 70% or better on all trainings and certifications. This change is being made to ensure those who represent your business can do so competently and accurately. The previous score of 55% or better no longer aligns with ensuring trainees can meet industry standards.

If your trainee does not pass the exam, they may retake the exam up to a total of three times before you are charged for a re-test.

A Fond Farewell:

Dear Members,

As of August 29th, 2025, the long-time and beloved Albany Staff is no longer a part of NYSASSRS. When we moved operations to Syracuse, the positions they held were no longer locally available. Having deep roots in the Albany region and enjoying coming into the office, not the computer work itself, they have moved on to other projects and new chapters.

Both Pat and Jim served us well; they were dedicated, knowledgeable, and above all, woven into the very fabric of the Automotive Industry in NY. Most New Yorkers will never know their names or how hard they fought for their rights, but we do, and we honor them with gratitude.

We wish them both luck as they enjoy their retirements and find new adventures.

If you happen to come across them in your daily lives, shake their hands and thank them for all that they have done. We are who we are, we are where we are, and we continue to grow because of them.

Thank you to Pat and Jim, truly.

-Amanda
