Christmas Inspiration – What does Bethlehem mean to You?
Long before the Shepherds were told by the Angels to Come & See the Savior, then Go & Tell the world about Jesus in Luke 2, Micah 5:2-5a prophesied Gods divine appointment:
2 But you, O Bethlehem Eph′rathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.
3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in travail has brought forth; then the rest of his brethren shall return to the people of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.
5 And this shall be peace, …. (RSV)
The world “Bethlehem” means “house of bread.” Jesus, “the bread of life” was born in Bethlehem in a manger (from French word “to eat”) which is a feeding trough!
Jesus said, I am the bread of life in John 6:35,48 and the bread of God that comes down from heaven in John 6:33, 41 (see John 6:22-58). Jesus also said, ‘no one can come to Me, unless the Father… draws them” in John 6:44,65.
As we eat good food with friends and family this Christmas season, lets remember that our greatest need is the spiritual food that Jesus provides for us for eternity! And let us not forget to respond with amazement like the shepherds who came to see the baby in the manger in Bethlehem. Luke 2:16-20 says, the shepherds, went back, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.”
The shepherds were the first evangelist to go and share the good news of Jesus! Be on Mission - like the shepherds – Come to Bethlehem and See the Savior, then Go & Tell the “Good News” to others!
Plan to read the entire Gospel of Matthew or Luke during December and then tell a friend about the Savior and encourage them to read the entire Christmas story as well.
