President's Message

by Catherine Sturtz

As we approach the holiday season, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to each of you. This time of year naturally invites us to reflect with gratitude—gratitude for our families, our colleagues, our students, and the meaningful work we do every day as business educators.

The holiday season also presents valuable teachable moments within our classrooms. Conversations around budgeting, smart spending, and savings habits become especially relevant for our students as they navigate real-life financial decisions. Encouraging them to make thoughtful choices now helps build the foundation for responsible money management in the future. It is a perfect opportunity for us to reinforce the personal finance lessons at the heart of business education.

As we reflect on the year, it is also important to recognize the role that professional organizations like the Long Island Business Teachers’ Association play in supporting our work. LIBTA continues to provide essential staff development opportunities, meaningful networking, and timely updates that strengthen our teaching and enhance the overall quality of Business Education across Long Island. Our shared commitment to professional growth and collaboration is what keeps our organization strong. Be on the look out for our Spring Conference information where we will be focusing on lessons that you can take back to your classroom and our student competitions both that will take place in March. You MUST be registered in advance for these events in order to attend, don’t miss out on these exciting opportunities.

Thank you for your dedication, passion, and ongoing contributions to the field of business education.

UPDATES ON PERSONAL FINANCE EDUCATION IN NYS

At the November 2025 Board of Regents meeting, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) proposed the amendment of section 100.2(c) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education to require instruction in climate education and personal finance education for public school students in grades kindergarten through 12. Information regarding the proposed amendment, including a field memorandum and frequently asked questions, can be found on NYSED’s Personal Finance Education and Climate Education webpages.

Send an email urging the Regents to require a standalone, semester-long, credit-bearing personal finance course before the public comment period closes on January 19, 2026.

Strengthening Student Data Privacy

You may now be aware that the recently enacted "Ed-2D Regulations" exist to protect students' personal information. If you have used programs like Investopedia in the past to play a Stock Market Game with your students, you will now have to show compliance with Ed-2D. Contact your provider for a compliance letter

to satisfy the law's provisions.
