Amazon Prime Video Ad Tier Sparks Class Action Lawsuit From Subscribers

The lawsuit takes aim at the ecommerce giant turning on ads for Prime Video users and charging them an additional fee for its ad-free tier. A proposed class action lawsuit, filed Friday in California federal court, claims breach of contract and violations of state consumer protection laws on behalf of users who saw the terms of their subscriptions with Amazon change when it pivoted to making its ad tier the default for its over 100 million subscribers. Walmart in Talks to Buy TV Maker Vizio

The retail giant is in talks to buy smart television-manufacturer Vizio for more than $2 billion, according to people familiar with the situation. The move would give Walmart more places where it can sell ads and pitch shoppers on goods. Walmart, including its Sam’s Club chain, has historically been Vizio’s largest customer. Vizio is historically the largest television brand sold at Walmart by sales. Read more

Sony Pictures Entertainment Third-Quarter Profits Jump 57% To $281M

Sony Group Corporation attributed the year-on-year increase for the Pictures segment to a jump in television and digital streaming licensing revenues as well as home entertainment sales, mainly due to the contribution of theatrical releases in 2023 (that would include the Oscar-nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which grossed $691 million theatrically worldwide and hit home ent in late summer). Also making for higher numbers was an increase in revenues for Crunchyroll. Read more

But the most vexing question isn’t even about who knew what and when, or what it’s going to cost. Instead, it’s simpler: who is this for? This unnamed service may be ostensibly geared towards the never-cord consumer or the post-cord consumer or the cable-frustrated consumer, but it’s really an R&D lab for its proprietors, especially Iger. Read more
