Black History Month is Here!

Black History Month Events at FIU

Celebrate Black History Month (BHM) at FIU by supporting the Black Student Union's (BSU) event programming for this month. The Office of Social Justice and Inclusion will also host several events for BHM. Mark your calendar for a special Fireside Chat cohosted by DEI, BSU, and FIU Foundation with the office of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on Tuesday, February 21 from 6-8 p.m. to discuss students' most pressing concerns. Free Screening of Crossing Overtown at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater

On Saturday, February 18, join us at the Historic Lyric Theater for a free film screening and panel discussion of Scott Barnett's documentary Crossing Overtown, featuring our very own Captain Delrish Moss from FIU Police. The film documents the Miami community’s integral role in the fight for civil rights. Key features of the documentary highlight the experiences of Captain Moss, former Ferguson, Missouri, Chief of Police, and longstanding City of Miami police officer. This documentary chronicles the early efforts of the Black community in Miami throughout the decades, fearlessly and relentlessly advocating for equality through a non-violent protest in the 1950s, the incendiary sparks igniting riots throughout the decades, and the persistent pursuits for justice, equality, and the leaders forged by fire through adversity.

There will be two film showings – the first showing at 12 p.m. will be followed by a panel discussion highlighting racial inequality, the role of the Black community in Miami, and their resiliency. The second showing is at 4 p.m. (film only.) While this event is free and open to the public, you must register for a ticket via Eventbrite to reserve your spot, as seating is limited.

The Dashboard allows users to take a deep dive into the survey data. Users can review trends by stakeholder groups or demographics and do intersectional analyses using different variables, such as gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, disability status, age group, among others.
