DEI SPECIAL EDITION
YEAR IN REVIEW
As we embark on a new year, we wanted to reflect on the accomplishments of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee in 2023. Committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusivity, the committee has been implementing key initiatives in alignment with our 3-Year DEI Action Plan.
NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENTS
One of the noteworthy achievements of the DEI Committee in 2023 was the development and release of an Equity Lens to review policies. This tool serves as a guiding framework, ensuring that our policies are inclusive and equitable, fostering an environment where every staff member feels respected and valued.

Additionally, the committee has created the Land Acknowledgement and African Ancestral Acknowledgement Guidelines. This guideline outlines when the acknowledgements should be used at Exhibition Place as well as how to implement and deliver the acknowledgements.

As part of our commitment to continuous learning, the DEI Committee also held various events throughout the year aimed at increasing awareness on topics such as mental health, authentic 2SLGTBQ+ Allyship, and Canadian residential schools. By fostering awareness and encouraging staff participation, we are actively contributing to a more inclusive workplace culture.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2024
Looking ahead for 2024, we are excited to continue creating broad-based training opportunities that increase understanding of issues related to DEI, develop a communication strategy to engage all levels of staff, and establish ongoing opportunities for staff to recognize and celebrate diversity at Exhibition Place.

We extend our gratitude to the DEI Committee members for their hard work and dedication throughout the year, and we look forward to improve, promote, and model equity-oriented and inclusive principles for Exhibition Place.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
As the holiday season wrapped up and the new year started, the DEI Committee set out to capture and celebrate the unique holiday traditions that our staff celebrate.

The DEI Committee extends its gratitude to the staff for sharing these heartwarming glimpses into their holiday celebrations.

Our new Christmas tradition was spending the holidays in Mexico!

Each year, my mom gets everyone a new set of pyjamas to wear on Christmas morning as we open our presents.

This year, we celebrated Christmas alongside my sister's partner's family who joined us in Toronto, coming all the way from Nova Scotia.

We spent the day together playing Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit and even singing along to karaoke!

Alexandra Serrano-Selbie, Marketing and Communications Manager
My Stepfather passed away a year ago this past Christmas and my mom, sister and I decided to keep his memory alive by recreating the Finnish Christmas traditions he liked to incorporate into the Holidays.

As dinner simmers away on Christmas Eve (a traditional Meat Stew called Karjalan Paisti, carrot casserole called Porkkanalaatikko, rutabaga casserole called Lanttulaatikko and rice boats called Karjalanpiirakka) we get the kids excited about the magic of “Joulupukki” (the Finnish Santa Claus). He bangs on the door before dinner (no one every sees him though as he knocks and disappears) and leaves a little something for everyone! Usually Finnish chocolates, socks and gloves.

Our girls had such a blast with Joulupukki/Santa coming during the late afternoon on Dec 24 (as well as that evening for Christmas morning on the 25th). Picture of the girls with Santa.

We have a tradition of taking a family photo every year in front of our Christmas tree after mass (see if you can spot my daughter Felicity’s Elf on the Shelf, her name is Coal).

We then have a Family Christmas lunch gathering at either my brother, sister, parents, or our place (this year my sister hosted it).

This is a picture of my sister and I.

This was our first time spending the holiday without the rest of our family, so it's a bit special.

I had a hot pot meal with my family. Having a more elaborate meal is our tradition over the holidays. Over at my partner’s side of the family, there were a lot of stocking stuffers which were all wrapped, and we had to guess what was inside it one by one.
