Monthly Snapshot

July 2023 | Edited by: Meredith Lew Tan

Last Month in DEM

Last month, two members of the DEM recently took part in a joint workshop co-hosted by the Stop TB Partnership Working Group on New TB Vaccines (WGNV) and the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) dubbed “Recognition and Control of Mtb Infected cells: From Basics to the Clinic.” On June 13 – 14, 2023. Paul Ogongo gave a presentation and Sara Suliman chaired one of the workshop sessions. The overall goal of the workshop, which brought together experts to guide the discussion on priorities for TB vaccine research, was to elucidate the mechanisms by which the immune system recognizes the Mtb-infected cell, to explore the degree to which such recognition can lead to the control of the intracellular microbe, and to discuss the translational implications of these observations.

Announcements

I-9 Reverification Needed by Aug 30 for Some Employees

HR is contacting affected employees as well as their managers with more information and recertification options. Please look out for this communication. If HR does not contact you, no action is needed.

Due to the end of COVID-19 flexibility, UCSF must reverify I-9 documents for approximately 2,200 academic and staff employees hired since late March 2020 by Aug. 30. (Note: This only affects employees who had their I-9 verified virtually.)

Documents that were previously reviewed virtually must now be physically examined by UCSF directly or via authorized representatives. Failure to complete this process by the deadline will result in the employee’s inability to continue working for UCSF. Click here for additional information.

Awards and Publications

Peter Hunt was interviewed by Álvaro Soto of Diario Sur, Spain for an article titled "The most vulnerable are those who are most exposed to pandemics". Click here to read the article in Spanish. Click here to read the English translation.

Joel Ernst, Sara Suliman, and Paul Ogongo were awarded an R01 for their collaborative project, “Functionally distinct human CD4 T cell responses to novel evolutionarily selected M. tuberculosis antigens”. This project includes collaborations with Drs. John Altin (TGen), Tim Sterling (Vanderbilt), and Bruno Andrade (FIOCRUZ).

Babak Javid was recently awarded a 3 year grant for a project titled "A generalized strategy for anti-bacterial virulence" from the Robert J. Kleberg and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation, Medical Research Awards. In collaboration with Mark Looney and Joanne Engel, the team will investigate the targeting of a pathway essential for protein synthesis that is conserved in the majority of bacterial pathogens and that the Javid lab has shown is crucial for antibiotic tolerance and host virulence in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. With the generous support of this award, Javid and colleagues will extend their findings in tuberculosis as well as to models of Pseudomonas infection -- a major driver of antimicrobial resistance in the US and globally.
