DOM Connectors
Be the "first friend" to your new DOM colleague!
Do you remember your first day on the job in the Department of Medicine (DOM)? Your first week? Did you benefit from the kindness of colleagues who offered a friendly ear and shared their own experiences?

We are launching a new initiative to help create a greater sense of belonging for those who join the department. The DOM Connectors initiative needs volunteers just like you, who are willing to serve as the "first friend" to a newly hired colleague, either in your own unit or another DOM division.

UCSF DOMINOs Program
DOMINOs (Department of Medicine Informal Networking Opportunities), a new DOM-sponsored program for faculty, staff, and trainees. DOMINOs was created to provide opportunities for in-person community building. DOM employees are welcome to join or host an event – with a goal of having many of them in your neighborhoods or other convenient gathering spots. Here are the DOMINOs events scheduled in April:

  • Lunch with Diane Havlir, MD, Professor and Associate Chair for Clinical Research, Division of HIV, ID and Global Medicine at ZSFG
  • All DOM researchers are welcome (please sign up by March 28)
  • Date: Tuesday, April 5 at 12 pm
  • Location: Torta Gorda, 2833 24th Street, San Francisco
  • Maximum participants: 5
 
  • Junior Faculty at the DOM-VA / Dinner with Sanyog Shitole, MBBS, Assistant Professor, Division of Cardiology at VAMC
  • All junior faculty at the DOM-VA are welcome (please sign up by April 1)
  • Date: Friday, April 15 at 6 pm
  • Location: Fiorella Clement, 2339 Clement St, San Francisco
  • Maximum participants: 5
 
  • Dinner with Bob Wachter, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Medicine
  • All DOM employees are welcome; priority will be given to those who have not attended this event before (please sign up by April 1)
  • Date: Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 pm
  • Location: Hamano Sushi, 1332 Castro Street, San Francisco
  • Maximum participants: 5
 
  • Get Creative at Earthfire Arts with Urmimala Sarkar, MD, Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine at ZSFG
  • For primary care physician faculty from all DOM sites
  • Date: Wednesday, April 20 at 5 pm
  • Location: Earthfire Arts, 438 Judah Street, San Francisco
  • Maximum participants: 11

UCSF COVID-19 Policy Updates
On April 1, UCSF will be removing the masking requirements for the campus – it will remain in place for clinical/hospital settings. However, since we are based at ZSFG, our actions must align with SFDPH policies. Masks must still be worn when onsite at ZSFG.
Building 3 Window Cleaning
Building 3 exterior windows will be cleaned on April 4 & 5. No action is required from us. 
National Nutrition Month
March is National Nutrition Month, a month that celebrates nutrition, culture, and food as well as the Registered Dietitian (RD) and Dietetic Tech, Registered (DTR). RDs and DTRs are integral parts of any patient's care team at ZSFG. They are responsible for gathering nutrition information about our patients and applying principles of medical nutrition therapy to determine the best foods to offer our patients based on their medical needs and cultural preferences. 

To encourage folks to explore a world of flavors in their own kitchen, ZSFG has sent out a recipe that uses a flavorful Ethiopian spice blend: Berbere spice mix. It can be purchased at specialty food stores and online, but it is also easy to put together in your own kitchen using ground spices.

April CFAR Seminar - April 6 - 9:30-11:30 AM
This month's CFAR seminar keynote speaker will be:
  • Carlos del Rio, MD - "Lessons from HIV that can be applied to COVID".

The ESI Presentation will be given by:
  • Jennifer Jain, MPH, PhD - "Mechanisms linking gender-based violence to worse HIV treatment and care outcomes among women in the United States".

There will also be 3 CFAR Early-Career Excellence Awardees:

  • Diana Alba, MD
  • Orlando Harris, PhD, FNP, MPH
Vitalant ZSFG Blood Drive
On Thursday, March 31 from 8:00 AM-12:30 PM and Friday, April 1 from 11:00 AM-3:30 PM, Vitalant will have a blood drive at ZSFG in the Avon (Building 4) parking lot.
Updated Guidelines for Meetings and Gatherings
Indoor meetings can resume. Staff must wear an isolation mask when indoors.

Attendees for indoor events is capped at 35 people. Maintaining 6' of distance is not required.

No food or drinks are permitted (per ZSFG) for indoor meetings.

Outdoor meetings with food and drinks are permitted. Staff may opt to wear masks when outdoors.

Ignoring Racism in Schools Actually Increases Prejudice
"Educators have the moral and professional responsibility to teach and lead on issues of race and racism in schools—it’s what children need, what most parents want, and what compelling research calls for.
But the evidence base on what works—and what doesn’t—in effectively teaching about race and racism isn’t well known or confidently cited, even by many education leaders. This leaves a vacuum that cynical political actors are filling with odious new laws that overburden teachers and essentially legislate educational malpractice."
