NORFOLK –
As construction continues on the I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, a portion of southbound Newtown Road will close periodically to traffic, beginning as early as May 2 at 6 a.m., to allow for crews to safely complete bridge and utility work.
Construction activities will occur on southbound Newtown Road at the interchange with I-264, with a detour
in place nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday, as well as continuously on weekends from 7 p.m. on Fridays through 5 a.m. on Mondays.
A signed detour will direct motorists heading southbound on Newtown Road to utilize Center Drive and Kempsville Road before re-accessing Newtown Road. An alternate detour will also be signed, directing motorists to utilize I-264 west, I-64 east, and I-264 east before re-accessing Newtown Road via exit 15.
A single-lane closure on northbound Newtown Road will also be in place during this time. No detour will be in place for northbound traffic on Newtown Road, but left turns onto Center Drive will be restricted.
During this time, crews will be completing drilled shaft work on the bridge over Newtown Road, part of extending the I-264 collector-distributor lanes in this location. This detour should be lifted in mid-June, as weather and schedule allow.
