Advent: Hope

This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent. For some, this might be a new term. Advent is a historic Christian tradition—a period when God’s people intentionally prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas while also looking ahead with eager expectation to His promised return.

Each Sunday of Advent highlights a different theme. This year, we’ll focus on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. As we look at each theme, we’re asking the Lord to prepare room in our hearts—to make space for us to expect Him, welcome Him and know Him more fully.

This first Sunday, we reflect on hope. We all have things we hope for, for circumstances to change or to simply be better. But Advent reminds us that as believers, we have a Hope rooted in the eternal. Hope anchored in Christ Himself. Advent reminds us of this: we belong to a God who never changes, who keeps His promises and who is always faithful. To be clear, Advent does not ask us to stop wanting God to work in our circumstances. But rather, Advent infuses our prayers with an eternal perspective, reminding our hearts that all will be made perfectly well when Christ comes again.

So as we enter this Advent season, we invite you to remember hope. Remember that hoping in God means waiting patiently with expectation for Him to come again. Throughout Scripture, God’s people wait with anticipation for Him to act, to rescue and fulfill His promises.

In your life today, how are you waiting on the Lord?

We have a hope that will never put us to shame, and we know this because we have the love of God poured in our hearts by His Spirit (Romans 5).

Try This:

  • Read Psalm 130 this week. Meditate on the words. In any and every brokenness, let your heart be reminded to hope and wait on Jesus.
  • Listen to this Song: "O Come, All You Unfaithful"
  • Light a candle every night before dinner. Let this candle be a visible reminder of the hope that Jesus has brought to the world.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

Galatians 5:13-17

_____

We are invited into a season of waiting, longing and delighting in the incarnation—the joyful truth that God is with us. And yet, so much in our world around us can easily “crowd out” Jesus during this time of year. In the midst of the hurts, noise and fear that often accompany this season, how do we set our hearts on the One who brings hope, peace, joy and love? We intentionally prepare Him room.

The Big Idea

(What is the author's point?)

Freedom in Christ leads to a life of loving service to others.

Why It Matters

(Why is this relevant to us?)

We live in a culture that prizes freedom and individuality. It can be easy for us to celebrate the freedom from sin and the burden of the law Christ offers and miss what that freedom calls us to. "Can I make my own decisions or choose my own path? Is my life my own?" The Galatians were also confused and needed Paul’s clarifying words. Freedom in Christ is not a license to follow one’s own inclinations and desires. We are freed from the weight and impossibility of earning favor and a relationship with God, not from any control. We are to be ruled by the Spirit. Freedom from sin is the freedom to serve one another in love. Christian liberty is a life controlled by the Spirit and characterized by loving service to God and others.

Good to Know

(What are some helpful insights into this passage?)

The majority of Galatian Christians were Gentiles. Congregations often had both Jews and Gentiles in them, which could lead to competing views of requirements for Christians.

Paul is the author of this pastoral letter, which aims to clarify areas of confusion regarding the Gospel, the Law and Christian life.

“freedom” (5:13) – liberty, freedom from slavery

“flesh” (5:13) – fallen human nature, unredeemed by God’s grace

“Spirit” (5:16) – the Holy Spirit, God’s power in us
