Expand Your Business

The Department of For-Hire Vehicles is excited to announce the DC Taxi Drivers Summit to be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020. The local for-hire industry provided about 73 million rides in 2019 and we want to discuss how taxi drivers can tap into those consumers.

The Taxi Drivers Summit will be held at Gallaudet University in the Kellogg Conference Center from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We want to hear about the challenges that are faced every day and consider ideas to help overcome those challenges. And we will offer strategies, concepts and innovations to support the expanding business opportunities.

The local for-hire ride industry generated at least $769 million in economic contributions in Fiscal Year 2019. Taxicabs provided about 8.8 million trips that averaged about $14 per trip to generate over $112 million in fares. Thus, it is clear that taxis are critical to the District's economy. However, we recognize that the taxi industry has been impacted by private vehicle operators. There has been a 39% decline in taxi trips over the past three years.

Yet, the data that DFHV collects and reviews indicates several areas that taxis have an advantage: taxi use is most prevalent on weekdays with peak use on Wednesday; taxis offer wheelchair accessible transportation; passengers have the option to pay with cash in a taxi; and taxi drivers must have a clean FBI background check.

The DC Taxi Drivers Summit will explore these issues and many more. Take advantage of this opportunity to register. Attendance is free and all participants will receive a $50 gas card upon the conclusion of the summit. Lunch and other refreshments will also be provided. My staff and I are looking forward to seeing you!
