For Earth Day we plan to donate 10% of our Saturday market sales to the new Certified Regenerative Farm program that @AGreenerWorld (https://agreenerworld.org/) is creating. Our herd is already certified by their Animal Welfare Approved program, and we are one of fifty farms worldwide invited to participate in the pilot program for the Regenerative Certification. While we've always been committed to environmentally sound practices, this pilot program has inspired us to reexamine our environmental impacts and identify areas we'd like to improve. This includes evaluating, measuring, and setting goals for continuing to regenerate the land we farm. Read our blogs about what we are doing on our website http://chapelhillcreamery.com/?page_id=1260 or on our Facebook page.

We have aged Thunder Mt. Swiss, aged since last May. The flavor is nutty and robust, and the texture is smooth which makes it nice for snacking or cooking. We also have Paneer, YoYo, our cream top yogurt style, tangy Dairyland Farmers, Dill Farmers, Hot Farmers, Calvander, aged Carolina Moon, young and lemony New Moon, and Hickory Grove.

Ground beef is $7.00/lb, has great flavor, and makes a fabulous cheeseburger with our Hickory Grove cheese. Cuts of our pasture raised beef include Chuck roasts, some steaks, and ground round.

We'll have pork chops, roasts, ground pork, and many varieties of sausage. Andouille is back in stock along with Mild and Hot Italian, Bratwurst, Polish, and Breakfast in links and loose pack. Check our sign for all the cuts of meat we have this week.

Fruchtenicht HoneyFrucht

The plight of honeybees came to the attention of the general public as a result of Colony Collapse Disorder which caused catastrophic losses to many beekeepers in 2007-2008. It was characterized by the disappearance of the adults, leaving behind the brood. A further peculiar feature was that the usual mortuary crew that descends on a dead colony didn't appear until up to two weeks later. The problem soon disappeared but the cause has never been determined.

Meanwhile we have habitat loss, ever increasing pesticide use, and the introduced parasitic mite Varroa destructor which jumped on the European honey bee from a related SE Asian species and came to America in the late 1980's. It vectors viruses and usually unless treated will kill a colony within two years. The various treatments can be unreliable and breeding efforts for resistant bees continue.

The publicity resulting from CCD caused an explosion of interest in hobby beekeeping to the point that some urban environments could be viewed as overstocked with bees. However, know that statistics from a few years back found that half of all new beekeepers lost their hive in the first year and only one in five were still keeping bees after three years. That situation has probably improved as local bee clubs have formed and teach classes for beginners but it still aint easy. Annual losses in the US have hovered between thirty and forty percent annually but beekeepers are able to make up the losses by splitting surviving colonies. There are currently about 2 3/4 million beehives in the US and 90 million world wide, so honey bees are not exactly imperiled but they give evidence of a deteriorating natural world.

Mario himself.   The back breaking work of harvesting the tender spears of asparagus is a daily chore everyday during the next couple of weeks.  The organic STRAWBERRIES are slowly ripening and we should be bringing some to market this Saturday.  What a challenge to grow and produce ORGANIC strawberries.. we are one of a few farms in North Carolina that produce organically without fumigants and pesticides.   The sugar snap peas are blooming (inside the greenhouse) and will be ready soon.  Tender head lettuces (red/green buttercrunch and romaine) from outside fields are being harvested this week along with swiss chard and baby kale.

There is so much happening on the farm right now!  I guess farming and spring kind of spell BUSY!
We are preparing our pastures for another year of grazing and winter fodder, preparing our gardens for our own nourishment and not surprisingly, welcoming lambs!

I had a conversation with a customer about the speed with which we could bring our products to the market...

We are a 60 acre farm and 30% of that is pond, creeks and wooded...not to mention our hay pastures which we need to guarantee the quality of what we feed in through the winter.
To do this right we must not over use the pastures, which means not too many sheep grazing too hard. This means we are not always able to keep up with demand.
On one hand that breaks our hearts, on the other hand we believe it's why you like our products so well!
We are growing, but slowly, and we think our customers approve!

We have pre-order still up and running if you're interested.
Also, follow us on Instagram for all the farm goings on.  Right now it's all lambs, no apologizes needed.
Terra ClothaTerraClotha

It's 1941. Mr. Thompson is trying to understand why Charles Foster Kane's last word was "Rosebud," and Mr. Bernstein suggests it might have been some girl Mr. Kane knew years ago.  "There were a lot of girls at the beginning," Mr. Bernstein says. "Yes," Mr. Thompson agrees, "but would you remember a girl for more than forty years and say her name on your deathbed?" "A person might remember things you wouldn't think he'd remember," Mr. Bernstein replies. "Me for example. One day, back in '96, I was crossing on a ferry and as we pulled out there was a second ferry pulling in - and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. She was wearing one of those hand-dyed dresses they sell at the Durham Farmers' Market. I only saw her for one second and she didn't see me at all - but I'd say a month hasn't gone by since then that I haven't thought of that girl and that dress." (With apologies to Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles.)

Hand-dyed clothing from Terra Clotha. Memorable.
