Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine

For this month's Equity & Belonging section, we have some timely information from the offices of Jasmin Siguenza and Lina Mendez of the Resource Centers (within ODO), regarding national and regional immigration enforcement happenings, and ways we can support students, staff, and faculty in this moment.

Some precautionary measures:

  • We encourage our campus to consider offering virtual or remote services to remain flexible as students navigate these challenges.
  • Place clear signage on building doors to clearly indicate events are "private."

At UCSF, if federal law enforcement officials, including ICE officers, visit any UCSF office, here are steps you could take:

Contact UCSF Police (Non-Emergency):

  • Call 415-476-1414 for guidance. They will initiate the triage process.

If a student is detained:

Phone: 530-219-7816

Emailgrace.ucimm@law.ucdavis.edu

Keep handy:

  • The contact number for UCSF's Chief Campus Counsel: 415-476-5003

The PFAC: Updates

For our July Patient & Family Advisory Council update, we have some bittersweet news: James Harrison will be stepping aside as co-lead of the PFAC to focus on other patient experience projects. Since co-founding the PFAC in 2018, James has been humbled by our fantastic and committed PFAC member volunteers who consistently provide relevant and insightful patient perspectives on the projects presented. He looks forward to seeing continued engagement with PFAC and encourages all faculty and staff to bring their projects to the monthly PFAC meetings.

Publications

Teva Brender, a UCSF internal medicine R3, together with Liz Dzeng, Sofia Weiss Goitiandia, and Julia Axelrod, published a study in JAMA Network Open about the systemic factors that influence clinician moral distress around potentially non-beneficial life-sustaining treatments near the end of life. They found that a hospital's institutional culture and support structures could either exacerbate, prevent, or mitigate clinician moral distress.

James Harrison co-mentored Cecilia Hurtado a UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program student and they published work in the Journal of Ambulatory Care Management describing how Community Health Centers responded and learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
