Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine

A "pearl" in promoting Equity and Belonging is a short, action-oriented, topic that aims to raise awareness, increase concern, and share strategies to mitigate our institutional inequities and promote inclusion.

For June, we are highlighting Anand Habib's reflection in his role as interim Social Medicine Core director, and the Pearl is sharing updates to raise awareness about the work toward health equity.

It is hard to believe that the academic year is ending and, with it, my time as interim director of DHM's Social Medicine core. I have been inspired by the thoughtfulness, humility, and varied ways in which members of our community approach and incorporate DEI/anti-racism into their education, QI, research, and clinical work.

Within the Social Medicine core, we are making steady progress on several fronts:

  1. We have continued to nurture a community partnership with GLIDE and were awarded an RWJF grant through which we will hold community-based listening sessions to better understand the perception of and experiences of care at UCSF and to guide ongoing equity work through the creation of a new Equity Hub
  2. Our Anti-Racism Task Force is launching a new feedback initiative through which colleagues can invite input on how they might hone DEI-A components of their projects.
  3. We rolled out surveys to better understand opinions around FYI flags (with Dr. Zoe Kopp) and social needs screening among hospitalized patients (with Dr. Brandon Scott).

I am reminded of a quote attributed to MLK, Jr., "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." DHM is large and diverse, and while progress is slow, we are doggedly moving in the direction of ensuring an equity-first approach, even amidst budget challenges. As Archna returns and I bid adieu, I am grateful for the collegiality of Martha Ockenfels-Martinez, James Harrison, Liz Dzeng, GLIDE, and the members of the Anti-Racism Task Force from whom I have learned so much and who have served as a fount of support. Thank you!

Matt Oertli

"As regards the doctors, I almost don't know where to begin. I've had a number of hospital experiences and dealt with a number of doctors, but this time, this experience at UCSF, was unlike any I've ever had before. An amazing array of clearly excellent doctors, all of whom seemed to know every detail of my situation, came to see me...every day. First, Dr. Matt Oertli is nothing short of being one of the best and most engaged doctors I've ever known. He gave generously of his time and when he discussed my situation and its treatment with me, his explanations were patient and perfect. I wish he were a PCP...I need a new one, at UCSF. The most Impressive part about the doctors was that It was very clear that they were working as a team, each contributing from within their specific expertise, but all fully aware of the whole treatment plan, and with that the whole human, me. I simply could not imagine a better overall experience with doctors during a hospital stay than that I had during this past hospital stay."

-a grateful patient
