Johanna (Jo) Glaser earned her medical degree and completed residency at UCSF. If she could be anywhere other than here, Jo would be swimming in a lake in the Eastern Sierras. On Sunday mornings, you can usually find Jo getting bossed around by her two kittens (she thinks they suspect that she's actually a dog person).

Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine

This month, as we welcome the autumn season, let us take a pause to review definitions as pertains to our ongoing endeavor to build relational culture in hospital medicine.

An Antiracist espouses three ideas: that racial groups are equals, that none needs developing, and that inequity is reduced with action and policies.

Segregationist and Assimilationist are defined as those who express the racist idea that a racial group is culturally or behaviorally inferior, the latter promoting development of the inferior racial group.

Consider these examples, and take some time to complete the table.

Here is a slide about defining radical empathy, as opposed to empathy. "Put yourself in someone else's shoes" is the classic description of acting with empathy. Consider instead to act with "radical empathy" by understanding another's experiences from their perspective, not yours.

Reminder, deadline to register for the Tea House is approaching, sign up today.

To share an example of how you are taking action to be antiracist, provide feedback or comments, or to share pearls for the next DHM newsletter, please email yalda.shahram@ucsf.edu.

Matthew Murrill

"Big shout out to Matt Murrill, who was a fantastic swan when I was on Goldman. There were a number of patients with chronic pain and psychiatric disease on my team and Matt did a phenomenal job handling quite a few challenging situations. All of them ended up better the next day thanks to Matt's help. Appreciate you."
