Brieze Bell received of the 2022-2023 Maxine Papadakis Award for Faculty Professionalism and Respect in the Department of Medicine.

Sajan Patel completed the Improvement and Leadership Development Program on teach back and is now officially recognized as a UCSF Health Lean Champion.

Yalda Shahram and the WomanLifeFreedom group at UCSF released this statement on the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16. Of note, on October 6, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist fighting against the oppression of women currently incarcerated in Iran for her protest activities.

Welcome DHM New Hire - October 2023

Johanna (Jo) Glaser earned her medical degree and completed residency at UCSF. If she could be anywhere other than here, Jo would be swimming in a lake in the Eastern Sierras. On Sunday mornings, you can usually find Jo getting bossed around by her two kittens (she thinks they suspect that she's actually a dog person).

DHM is holding its Annual Staff Retreat on Friday, November 3 at Bare Bottle and Nombe.

This month, as we welcome the autumn season, let us take a pause to review definitions as pertains to our ongoing endeavor to build relational culture in hospital medicine. 

An Antiracist espouses three ideas: that racial groups are equals, that none needs developing, and that inequity is reduced with action and policies.

Segregationist and Assimilationist are defined as those who express the racist idea that a racial group is culturally or behaviorally inferior, the latter promoting development of the inferior racial group.

Consider these examples, and take some time to complete the table.

Here is a slide about defining radical empathy, as opposed to empathy. "Put yourself in someone else's shoes" is the classic description of acting with empathy. Consider instead to act with "radical empathy" by understanding another's experiences from their perspective, not yours.
