Diaconate Retreat 2025

This year's Annual Retreat for the Diaconate Community of Altoona-Johnstown Diocese was held from June 8th to June 12th at the Antiochian Village in Bolivar. The theme was "The Gospel of Luke and The Jubilee Year of Hope", and was presented by Retreat Master Father James DiLuzio C.S.P.

Each morning and evening of the Retreat were broken up into sessions with specific topics and it was in one of these sessions that Fr. James spoke on Jesus powerful Sermon on the Plain (Luke Chapter 6) which formed the heart of the retreat.

Aside from the sessions with Father James, the Deacons and their wives reinforced their spiritual growth and unity by participating in Daily Mass, along with morning and evening prayers which provided moments of solemn reflection and communal worship. There was also ample time throughout the day for personal stories, commentaries, songs, opportunities for conversation, and private meditation.

As the Retreat came to a close on Thursday morning, many were reaffirmed in their commitment to serve, while others felt rejuvenated by the Holy Spirit which was present throughout the retreat.

Annual report finds there are ‘not enough’ deacons being ordained in the U.S.

Tessa Gervasini-published June 14, 2025

The number of ordinations of permanent deacons in the United States has decreased by nearly 200 from 2023 to 2024, according to a recent survey.

The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University published the survey results in its 2025 report “A Portrait of the Permanent Diaconate in 2024.”

According to the report, 587 men were ordained to the permanent diaconate in 2023, but in 2024, the number fell to 393.

The report was created in collaboration with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations.

The study surveyed ordained permanent deacons who intend to remain deacons, excluding transitional deacons (those who will be ordained to the priesthood) Read Full Story

Deacon from the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown celebrates 40th Anniversary of his Ordination

On June first, the parish community of St. John the Evangelist in Altoona, joined to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ordination for Deacon Gene P. Neral.

It began with the 10 AM Mass celebrated by Msgr. Michael Becker.

Deacon James Janisko was the deacon of the Word and Deacon Gene Neral was the deacon of the Eucharist, and also delivered the homily for the Mass.

Deacons Donald Gibboney and Jack Orlandi assisted with Communion along with three extraordinary ministers from the parish. After communion as a special gift from the choir, Debbie Johnson accompanied by Patti Jimenez offered a moving rendition of the hymn Pie Jesu.

Following the Mass a large part of the congregation proceeded to Bailey Hall where a buffet luncheon was served along with a special cake for dessert.

A number of those who spoke during the luncheon, commented on the 30 years of service that Deacon Gene has given to St. John the Evangelist parish and how it has affected their lives. Msgr. Becker thanked Deacon Gene for the 15 years he has served with him, and the choir director, Patt Jimenez, presented Deacon Gene with a special gift from the parish.

Deacon Gene shared how the encouragement of his wife, Barbara, and the support of the parish faith community made it all possible.

At a luncheon during the subsequent diaconate retreat, Bishop Mark presented Deacon Gene with a new lapel pin acknowledging his 40 years of service as a deacon in the Diocese of Altoona/Johnstown.

As of the end of June, Deacon Gene mentioned that he is still receiving cards and letters and receiving congratulations from those he meets.
