A Mother's Tale (memoir) by Phillip Lopate. Most writers know Lopate as the father of the modern personal essay, but he is one of those rare and talented writers who can write in multiple genres. A Mother's Tale was inspired by Lopate interviewing his mother in the 1980s to hear and record her compelling life story, sharing her childhood wounds of losing her dad at a young age, learning to be a mother, a rocky marriage to his father, and numerous affairs. She candidly reveals details of her personal life rarely shared with close family members, especially a son or daughter.

Lopate is a master of storytelling, making readers feel as if they're walking through life with him. His sense of humor and self-deprecating ways make this a difficult book to put down. Highly recommended!
