US Department of Labor Encourages Industry Employers, Stakeholders to Join OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced today that it has scheduled the eighth annual National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction for May 3-7, 2021. OSHA encourages construction employers and other stakeholders to join the event to promote awareness and training to address one of the industry’s most serious dangers.

“Workers suffer serious and fatal injuries from falls and have a devastating impact on families and businesses,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health James Frederick. “This important collaboration with the construction industry encourages employers

Risky Behaviors More Prevalent in Construction

New research from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that several behaviors that contribute to higher health risks are more prevalent among construction employees than workers in other industries.

Previous studies suggested that construction workers who exhibit certain health risk behaviors may be more likely to experience work-related injuries. The NIOSH study explored how common these types of behaviors are among construction workers.

Innovation Is Paramount to Increasing
Worker Safety

The construction industry has inherently more risks than many other industries. According to a recent report from The Center for Construction Research and Training, 79,660 construction workers experienced lost workday injuries in 2019, with one-third due to contact with objects or equipment. This is not simply the cost of doing business. Innovative thinking, processes and products that eliminate, reduce and mitigate risk are appearing with increasing frequency. Construction stakeholders should take note.

Strategies for Surviving Recessions:
Management Reporting and Forecasting

Like death and taxes, recessions are inevitable. Whether caused by geopolitical conflict, economic shock or stock market disturbance, these destroyers of wealth and jobs are part of the circle of business life. Of course, knowing recessions will recur doesn’t make them any less disruptive. In the already cyclical construction industry, plans must be in place, and decision makers need real-time access to key information. To survive the next recession, companies need the right management in place; real-time, on-demand reporting systems; and the ability to forecast.
