SHOULD CONTRACTORS RISK MOVING
INTO NICHE BUILDING SECTORS?

In the construction industry, the term “specialty contractors” usually refers to subcontractors who deal exclusively with one piece of the construction process like metal framing, flooring or curtain walls. However, all but the largest conglomerates are niche contractors in some way.

Some focus on public work, while others work only in the private sector. And some target particular markets like schools, hospitals, industrial facilities, multifamily, data centers or bridges. 

REMINDER: DISCA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The Drywall Interior Systems Contractors Association, Inc. of New Jersey (DISCA) has a Scholarship Program for the children or grandchildren of management employees of companies contributing to the DISCA Industry Promotion Fund (IPF). The scholarships are to help defer the cost of college and other educational expenses for a two or four-year education at an accredited college or an accredited vocational school. LEARN MORE>

In the construction industry, there are inherent risks for workers, even on the safest of jobsites, which is why supervisors and safety personnel are encouraged to be vigilant in their efforts to identify and mitigate potentially dangerous situations, many times as work goes on around them.

JOBSITES' MOST UNIVERSAL HAZARD: PERSONAL CELLPHONES

The use of mobile phones for wireless streaming of music, podcasts or other entertainment is everywhere. Walk down any street in the country and you’ll often see more people wearing headphones than those that aren’t. Some of these listening devices even come equipped with sound-canceling features that completely block off noises from the outside world.

The growing use of headphones, especially among young Americans, has left some construction companies scrambling to formulate policies for their use on the jobsite.
