2020-2021 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

BRIDGEWATER, N.J., July 8, 2020 – The Drywall & Interior Systems Contractors Association of NJ (DISCA) recognized the five recipients of the 2020-2021 DISCA Scholarship on July 7, 2020. These five students have earned a four-year, merit-based scholarship to offset some of the college and educational expenses at their chosen collegiate institutions.  Each year, DISCA awards college scholarships to deserving students who demonstrate a positive engagement in community service, strong leadership qualities, activity in extracurricular activities, and strength in academics.

OSHA'S NEW COVID-19 INVESTIGATIONS, SILICA GUIDANCE

OSHA has been fairly aggressive about updating the construction industry about how employers should respond to actual and suspected cases of COVID-19 and how it will enforce suspected violations of health and other safety standards during the pandemic. However, a recent webinar, hosted by the Associated General Contractors of America and featuring attorney Bradford Hammock from Littler Mendelson P.C.'s Virginia office, shed some additional light on what contractors can expect from OSHA in the near-term regarding COVID-19 and other issues.

It’s been nearly a decade since organizations needed to give serious thought to how they would ride out a recession and come out stronger and more resilient. With little notice, other than the obvious signal that we were long overdue for a different economic cycle, the global pandemic put nearly all engineering and construction (E&C) companies squarely back into survival mindset. As states shut down, job sites were shuttered, and millions of employees were laid off, E&C firms suddenly found themselves in a position that most weren’t even envisioning just four to six months ago.

BONDED AND INSURED: ARE BOTH NEEDED? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? WHY DOES IT MATTER?


Contractors are required to be bonded and insured. Projects usually require general liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. Projects can also require a bid bond, a performance bond and a payment bond. 

But how are each different and why are each required? Surety bonds and insurance are both a form of risk management meant to protect against a financial loss.
